This would have worked great for the premiere of any “Matrix” flick, but otherwise, it’s a bit too futuristic for us. Kim wore this for the People’s Choice Awards. The ceremony was held in December 2021, so at least she was warm. Maybe she was trying to cosplay as a superhero?
If Superman wears his underwear on top of his clothes, Kim can wear her bra on top of hers as well. This is a great way to call for equality between men and women! Kim took it a little too far, in our opinion; however, you know what they say, there is no accounting for taste.
The Revenge Dress
Breaking away from the traditional British designers, Diana wore a dress by Christina Stambolian, a renowned Greek designer. Reportedly, Diana had planned to wear a Valentino dress for this event but, at the last minute, chose the Christina Stambolian design instead. This is an example that sometimes, last-minute decisions end up being for the best!
As this event came shortly after her quickly dissolving marriage, the Stambolian dress was later known as “the revenge dress.” This was indeed one of Diana’s most unforgettably glamorous looks. Since then, Diana's little black dress has become a cultural icon and even received a highlight moment on the TV show "The Crown."
Renée Zellweger
What's more 00s than Renée Zellweger in "Bridget Jones’s Diary”? Nothing is. Not to mention 2002's "Chicago." Zellweger was also one of the highest-paid actresses in 2008, but sadly, right after that, it seemed that her career momentum slowed down, and she was starring in flop after flop.
Before we ruffle any feathers, there’s no doubt that Renée Zellweger is an amazing actress, and we have found her in some ravishing outfits too. Still, her box office bombs, combined with some questionable plastic surgery that left her looking completely different, have resulted in her kind of disappearing from the public eye.
Liv Tyler
Liv Tyler not only inherited her rock star dad, Steven Tyler, good looks, but she has also adopted his exquisite sense of fashion. The actress started her modeling career at the early age of 14 but quickly transitioned into acting, where she has found even greater success and satisfaction. One of our favorite roles is when she portrayed Arwen Undómiel in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
In this photo, beautiful Taler is wearing an astonishing design by Francisco Costa and a Cartier bracelet for Calvin Klein of a little (but long) black dress. She wore this at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2006.
Jada Pinkett Smith
Some of you might only know Jada as Will Smith's wife, but she's a lot more than that. Anyone who was around during the turn of the millennium would know that she was part of the second and third installations of the legendary "The Matrix" Series. Ever since then, it seems like she is less interested in acting and finds producing more fulfilling.
But, forget about movies and husband, let's talk about this dress. Jada pulls off this high-slit black gown to perfection. On one hand so revealing, yet on the other so classic and prestige. The matching belt and straps spice up the clean color of the fabric, making Jada shine like no other.
Kate Grigorieva
Yekaterina Sergeyevna Grigoryeva (kind of a mouth full) more famously known as Kate Grigorieva, is a Russian model that made it big in the U.S. as one of the beloved Victoria's Secret Angel between 2015 and 2016. The blue-eyed beauty participated in many beauty pageants at the beginning of her career.
Here is a fun fact for you lovely readers: she won second place in the Russian adaptation of Tyra Banks' "America's Next Top Model." The black dress she is wearing here is definitely suited for a cold place like Russia, having long sleeves and is made of pure black leather.
Drew Barrymore
We first saw her in the classic 80s film, "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," playing little sister Gertie. But it wasn’t until the cult horror film "Scream" that Drew Barrymore became an extremely successful actress. In the 00's she became the ultimate leading lady, with movies like "Charlie’s Angels," "He's Just Not That Into You," "The Perfect Catch" and "Donnie Darko."
She has made a comeback with her successful talk show, "The Drew Barrymore Show' and has still not said her last word. The black dress she is wearing here is a classic. You cannot go wrong with a long silky sleeveless gown.
Jordin Sparks
Jordin Sparks is one of the few American Idols who managed to have a successful career after the show, with several singles and albums ranked at the top of the Billboard Charts. Sparks is known to be the youngest winner in the history of the show, and she holds that title until this very day.
The black dress she has on will never be dated. The top lacy part adorns her neckline, meaning no big jewelry is needed here. With her small yet classy pearly earrings and her hair tied back so modestly, it's safe to say that Jordin Sparks has it all.
Gwendoline Christie
Gwendoline Christie is best known for her role of Brienne of Tarth in "Game of Thrones." She is also recognized for playing First Order stormtrooper Captain Phasma in two Star Wars films, "The Force Awakens" and "The Last Jedi."
Now, if you want to know how old Gwendoline is, unfortunately, we won't be able to help you as she has admitted to not knowing her exact age, and funnily enough, so does her mother. The dress she is wearing says so much about her. It has long sleeves, trying not to reveal too much, and yet, the long slit keeps things a little more sultry. In any case, she is stunning.
Geena Davis
Geena Davis, a 6’0" goddess, is famous for her performances in films like "Thelma & Louise," "The Long Kiss Goodnight," and "Beetlejuice." In past interviews, Davis confessed that she had lied about her height at modeling auditions because, believe it or not, you can be considered "too tall."
In our opinion there is no such thing as too tall, how else would she have pulled off a dress like this? It can only work on women as high as Davis. The fabric's design is what makes this unique piece so interesting and the little white flowers on the top part, are sprinkled in such elegance.
Iggy Azalea
She took the charts by storm in 2014 with her hit single, "Fancy," featuring Charli XCX, but Iggy Azalea soon lost steam. The Australian rapper's confident demeanor definitely makes her stand out in a crowd. After a few years in and out of the spotlight, Azalea released her third studio album in 2021 and has since hinted that that might mark the start of her official retirement from the music industry. Only time will tell!
In this black piece she is wearing, the sparks say it all. She obviously could not wear something less revealing than this, and a modest dress would not work; however, if you have to go black then bring the glitter on.
Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence certainly looks like a super stunning spy in a beautiful black gown by Versace on a photocall for her movie “Red Sparrow” in London. The gray London landscape behind only emphasizes this woman's charm, and everything seems to fit in to perfection.
The dress is solid black with a still and firm structure, so no matter how strong the British winds blow, this dress is not going anywhere. Lawrence wisely chose classic black hills, making her look tall and sophisticated, like a true Hollywood star. There is seemingly no dress that Lawrence can't pull off (which makes sense, because she's an incredible actress).
Jennifer Coolidge
Jennifer Coolidge is a familiar face in Hollywood. Coolidge has starred in "American Pie," "2 Broke Girls," and "A Cinderella Story" alongside Hilary Duff. She is best known for comedic roles, but she actually always dreamed of taking on more serious and dramatic roles while at college.
Of course, Collidge has had something of a renaissance with her role in "The White Lotus." She is clear evidence that you don't have to be petite to look gorgeous in a fitted black dress. Fun fact: Coolidge spent some time waitressing in New York (as is a right of passage in Hollywood), and worked alongside fellow soon-to-be-famous actress Sandra Bullock.
Kathryn Bigelow
Unlike most people on this list, Kathryn Bigelow is a behind-the-scenes kind of girl. Her celebrated Hollywood career includes directing and producing some memorable films such as "Near Dark," and "Point Break" and in 2010 she directed the film "Zero Dark Thirty." It won her an Oscar and made her the first female director to snag the award.
Now, although Bigelow is a star on the other side of the camera, it doesn't mean she can't look like a real superstar. No much is needed to look supreme and the classic black dress she has on here does exactly that.
Mariah Carey
Three years before her world-famous (and unavoidable) Christmas album, Mariah Carey attended the 1991 Grammys for her nomination as Best New Artist. The diva won the award that night and looked spectacular while doing it. Here we see a 20-year-old Mariah wearing a classic, black strappy dress and a silver neckline.
She wore matching, long silver earrings and defined cascading curls to show off her beautiful mane. Nowadays, it’s rare to see Mariah styling anything other than a super straight hairdo. The Christmas Queen has recently left Hollywood and gone back to live in New York, where she grew up.
Adele
This British singer and songwriter won over the hearts of us Americans with her first single. To date, the singer has won numerous prestigious awards including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and 15(!) Grammys, with many more to come, we're sure.
We have seen her in all shapes and sizes and no matter what she wears or how much she weighs, in our opinion, she always looks amazing. In this photo is wearing a beautifully cut dress that highlights her small waistline and blurs out parts that are less flattering. It's one of those dresses that will never date and will always stand out in a crowd.
Melanie Griffith and Kris Jenner
Kris Jenner has been a wonderful friend and confidant. She was what Melanie needed after going through her last divorce. When someone asked about their friendship, Melanie said, “We’ve both been divorced a couple of times, we’ve had a few kids, and we’ve had life-changing situations in common. I’ll be having a [bad] day, the lowest of the lows, and she’ll come over, sit on my bed, and be right there with me.”
And just like in real life, here we see the two complementing one another with similar black dresses that make the pair look so chic. When you bring so much character with you, there is no need for too many details on the dress you wear.
Meghan Markle
On July 10th, 2018, Meghan Markle wore a stunning little black dress by Dior to the Royal Air Force’s 100th Anniversary ceremony, at Westminster Abbey, London. Despite the color, the dress was quite similar to her wedding dress, with its simple shape and boat neck neckline, which flattered her petite frame. She made the look even more fabulous with a stylish fascinator, nude pointed pumps, and Cartier earrings.
To highlight the beautiful neckline of the dress, the Duchess wore her hair in a sleek bun. Mrs. Markel sure knows what to where, however, when not to wear it, as according to Royal British tradition, black is only worn at funerals. Oh, well, she is not there to worry about things like this anymore.
Emma Roberts
All grown up, Ms. Roberts is still pursuing an acting career. She played Jess in "Who We Are Now" in 2017" and also starred in the ninth season of "American Horror Story: 1984."In March 2019, Emma hooked up with fellow actor Garret Hedland of "TRON: Legacy" fame. The two welcomed a child into the world together in December 2020. Sadly, the two lovebirds announced their split in January 2022.
If we put Roberts's personal life aside and focus on her magnificent dress, there are no sad announcements to make. No surprise here, and Emma takes after her aunt and looks remarkable in this almost royal black dress.
Kendall Jenner
With her model physique and her beautiful face, Kendall Jenner is no stranger to showing off what her mother gave her. She has been doing just that since she first made her celebrity debut, and it became extremely apparent at the MTV Movie Awards in 2016.
While her black dress was floaty and feminine, it was her shoes that really caught us off guard. It's safe to say that celebs are known for wearing high heels as it is, but this particular pair took that to the extreme. As if that wasn’t enough, you couldn’t just whip these off in a hurry.
Kylie Jenner
Kylie Jenner, "Forbes's" youngest self-made billionaire, was dressed to the nines in 2018's Met Gala. In a long gown designed by Alexander Wang and bejeweled sunnies, she looks like she's ready to take on the world, though, let's admit it, she already has.
This look is tame compared to what we're used to seeing at the Metropolitan Museum Gala, but it still works. These days, alongside appearing on television on "Keeping Up With The Kardashians," Jenner has been spreading her talent in cloth designing, stressing, and whatever she can get her hands on. At this stage - they might be the most famous family in the world.
Grace Jones
Jamaican-born model and singer Grace Jones have been a fashion icon since the 70s. Her disruptive and bold fashion choices have made her one of America’s most famous models, stunning everybody at every event with her unique outfits. Here we see Grace Jones attend the 1983 Grammy Awards in an avant-garde, science-fiction-themed black leather-straw outfit and an ultra-wide brim hat that looked more like an umbrella than an accessory.
She paired the look with jewel-toned, purple eyeshadow, hot pink blush, and flawless red shiny lipstick. Jones is now well in her 70s. However, this has not stopped her from staying on stage and showing the world what she's got.
Adriana Lima
Adriana Lima is a Victoria's Secret Angel who made our list with her unique style in what can only be described as an extraordinary black dress. This goddess was crowned "Supermodel of Brazil" at the age of 15! And she has been called "the most valuable Victoria's Secret Angel."
At first glimpse, the dress she is wearing here looks as if several dresses were merged into one, each with its own uniqueness and saying. The femininity of the gown is cut by a wide belt making the dress (and Adriana) stand out even more than what she usually does. Adriana wears this to perfection.
Sydney Tamiia Poitier
Actress, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, is the daughter of the late legendary actor Sir Sidney Poitier and Canadian actress Joanna Shimkus. It is hard to miss her in her several television and film appearances, and over the years, she has become one of the most recognized faces on television.
The black dress Poitier is wearing in this photo is a two-piece. A long neverending classic black skirt is paired with a Pettit black top, made of leather and lace. The use of both these is a stark contrast of material, bringing both strength and softness, exactly what beautiful Sydney Tamiia Poitier represents.
Karlie Kloss
Karlie Kloss is one of the tallest models out there, which is probably why you'd be hard-pressed to find her in high heels when she's not on the runway. She once told People, "I think I would look like a crazy woman walking around NYC in heels since I’m 6’1 and 6’4 in heels. Plus, I take the subway, so I’d stand out even more!" Would you be hesitant to wear heels if you were her height?
Now, forget high heels; let's take a look at this dress. Karlie is wearing a long sleeveless turtle neck gown. A solid black ring connects the top and bottom parts, which consists of a tight skirt with a flurry ending. Her already glamorous appearance is completed with a silver bracelet and flattering black heels. There was no way she was going to part with them here.
Alexandra Daddario
Alexandra Daddario’s eyes are enough for anyone to instantly fall in love with her. If you also add a successful acting career and an Instagram with over 13.5 million followers, you’ll see why we’re all looking forward to where this 33-year-old beauty may take us. The actress has been asked many times to take a chance with modeling as an additional career path, but no luck so far. I'm sure we'd all love to see that!
Until then, check Alexandra out as the star of Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" music video and prepare to be swept away by her beauty and grace. She couldn't choose a more flattering dress than what she wears hear, which only highlights all the prestige within her.
Ashley Graham
Ashley Graham is unarguably the most beautiful plus-size model in the world. She was spotted at the young age of 13 by an agency while shopping at a mall in Omaha, Nebraska, and her modeling career began from there. In 2017, Graham released a book, 'A New Model: What Confidence, Beauty, and Power Really Look Like,' where she tells of her experiences as a plus-sized model and body positivity advocate.
The dress she is seen in here emphasizes her natural curves and makes her even more beautiful than she already is. She has a black sleeveless leotard covered in a fit transparent dress, and she pulls it off to perfection.
Laura Dern
The actress, known for her performances in "Blue Velvet" and "Jurassic Park," said in an interview with USA Today that she remembers growing very tall at an early age. Can you believe that she tried to cover it up!? When posing for photos, she would try to stick out one of her hips and move her shoulders down, trying to appear 7 inches shorter than she was.
Anyhow, Laura shows us here that when you wear black, it doesn't always have to be a dress. The elegant and classic two-piece suit made of a pair of pants and a vest looks so feminine and sophisticated. Laura brings class and grace to the red carpet alongside her talent and natural charm.
Claudia Schiffer
The stunning German model and actress Claudia Schiffer is often considered Brigitte Bardot's doppelganger. She rose to fame during the early 90s, and she still holds the Guinness Book of World Records record for the supermodel who appeared on the largest amount of magazine covers.
Here she is wearing a lacy transparent dress (yes, yes, we know, this was taken a few years ago, we are sure she wouldn't have chosen this style today); however, back in the day, lace is what it was all about. Although not everyone's cup of tea, to some, the gown brings interest and sophistication and highlights how stunning Claudia is.
Meghan Markle
Although Meghan Markle usually abides by the royal dress code and only wears modest garments, she has occasionally bent the rules a little for a special outfit. Here we see her when she made her first solo appearance at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in a dramatic black Givenchy gown.
The dress is a mix of velvet and other fabrics and features sheer balloon sleeves. Typically, royalty does not wear anything sheer, but Markle pulls it off and looks elegant and still chic. Yes, Markle can get away with anything; however, can the Royal family get away with her?
Billy Porter & Adam Smith
American actor and singer Billy Porter of "Kinky Boots" fame walked his boots right out the relationship door after dating businessman Adam Smith for a year between 2009 and 2010. Shattered by the loss, Billy recounts he said to his therapist, “Now I know what love looks like, and it just walked out the door.”
Billy and Adam stayed in tentative touch, and in 2015, while watching Hamilton together, Adam reached over and held Billy’s hand. The ending? A happy marriage since 2017! The dress seen here is a summary of it all. It's big, grand, and everything we want a black dress to be.
Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe won what would be the final award of her career when she attended the Golden Globe Award ceremony in 1962. Her sleek gown, a full-length dress ornately embroidered with sequins, sparkled in black. It was designed for her by Norman Norell. It is one of his most famous designs ever.
The snug-fitting dress, which was also a part of her personal wardrobe, featured a V-neck top and a backless back. She collected her Golden Globe for “World’s Favorite Film Star” at the event. Monroe is always associated with her white blowing in the wind famous piece; however, as you can see, there is much more to the legend.
Emily Ratajkowski
London-born model, designer, and actress Emily O'Hara Ratajkowski originally rose to fame in 2013 after appearing topless in Robin Thicke's music video, "Blurred Lines," which became the #1 song of the year in several countries. Emily’s style, along with her feminist views and lifestyle, have caused both support and criticism among fans and critics.
She also appeared in several films and TV shows, including "iCarly," and even commercials for videogames such as "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare." Although the dress she is wearing here is revealing and doesn't leave much for the imagination, it still manages to preserve some class and make Ratajkowski look sophisticated and glamorous.
Amy Poehler
Funny woman Amy Poehler is a multi-talented entertainer who became famous for her work on SNL and her starring role as Leslie Knope in NBC’s "Parks and Recreation." She’s delivered laughs to people everywhere, which is one of the reasons she’s won many prestigious awards during her career. In 2001, she launched her own production company.
Later, The Hollywood Reporter said that she’s a “powerful arbiter of sophisticated comedy.” Poehler lives in Los Angeles with her children from her previous marriage to a fellow actor Will Arnett. As seen in this photo, she too appreciates the extravaganza touch to a classic black dress and brings her personal touch to the event she attended.
Angela Bassett
At the 51st Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, Angela Bassett stole the show. Not only did she win the Best Actress prize for her portrayal of Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” but she also won big on the red carpet. Her gown featured satin and lace, with one side of the bodice in satin and the other in lace. Around the waist, the lace and satin came together with peplum trim.
This was Bassett’s breakout role, and she did the award circuit in style. We have a feeling we are going to hear a lot about her in the future, and she will adorn not only our screens but the red carpet, too, on her way to grasping some more awards.
Lady Gaga
What can one say about Lady Gaga that hasn't already been said? Over the years, the trailblazing star has worn nearly every outlandish look imaginable and made it work. Still, who can forget her fabulous black ensemble at the 2009 VMAs? The star wore a black lace Jean Paul Gaultier dress with a Dragon print silk underlay from Gaultier's fall/winter collection.
Gaga completed the look with a neck brace and mask by Keko Hainswheeler. She was also accompanied by Kermit the Frog. The star still constantly works and creates new music and new movies, so we haven't heard the last from her yet.
Sharon Stone
Before we remind you of the wonderful movies and amazing work Sharon Stone has been doing over the years, let's have a look at the astonishing piece she is wearing here. A black dress, by all means, does not have to be plain or boring and can be dazzling just as much as any glittering gown. Stone was one of the leading ladies in the industry during the 1990s.
Her hallmark is, without a doubt, "Basic Instinct;" however, "Casino," "The Muse," and many others have been huge successes too. Well in her 60s, Stone continues to work in the industry, maintaining the glamorous reputation she has built for herself.
Lil Nas X
Did someone say drama? Because Lil Nas X brought all of it to the red carpet at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. Although dubbed the "industry baby," the rapper was anything but doe-eyed at the VMAs. He arrived in a pair of shiny black pants, a glittering feather-cage overskirt, and a matching headpiece, instantly making an unconventional statement.
The look came together with gorgeous diamonds from De Beers. He looks like he stepped straight out of the sets of “Black Panther.” Known for his boundary-breaking sense of style, the rapper, once again, did not disappoint! Who said little when talking about the black dress?
Rooney Mara
“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” star Rooney Mara chose a chic Nina Ricci, a Parisian-style house. Rooney Mara said she picked the stunning black cutout dress because she liked it and wanted to represent who she really is, according to “The Hollywood Reporter.”
The minimalist elements of the gown were reiterated, with Mara deciding not to wear jewelry. Her hairstyle, pulled back tightly, also added to that look. So besides looking amazing, Rooney Mara donates her time to charitable causes and works for the Uweza Foundation, which supports programs for families and children in the Kibera slum of Nairobi.
Kerry Washington
The most brazen fashion display on the 2020 red carpet was brought to us by Kerry Washington. The “Scandal” star rocked a black silk ensemble that incorporated a black blazer and a skirt with a long slit. In lieu of a shirt, she wore a sparkling bling chain bodice. The belly chain was knotted and draped, presumably holding the blazer together.
The creation is by Altuzarra. The actress was a presenter at the event. On Instagram, Washington tagged her look as #Glam. Washington has been starring on our screens for almost two decades and has a promising future ahead of her in the industry.
Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett loves a black jumpsuit - but how many of them can you wear before they get boring? Well, the Australian actress showed everyone how far a little creativity could go. Blanchett looked fresh as a daisy at the premiere of her movie, "Tár," at the 2022 Venice Film Festival.
This black velvet ensemble by Schiaparelli features an adornment of flowers along the bodice. Fun fact: the original runway version of the look featured a necklace in the shape of an anatomical human heart. Each to their own, but we're glad Blanchett omitted that piece for the red carpet.
Anne Heche
Here, we remember the late Anne Heche making an audacious fashion move at the Golden Globes Awards. Playfully dressed in an all-black leather gown with a collar of sparkling gems, she completes the outfit with a studded black leather bag in hand. At the 58th Golden Globes, Heche attended, hand-in-hand, with “Ally McBeal” star Lucy Liu.
The actress told “Business Insider” that old flame Ellen DeGeneres frowned on her dressing so revealing. In 2001, she walked the red carpet as revealing as she wanted to be. In 2022 Heche tragically lost her life in a terrible car crash. There were no illegal substances or alcohol involved; just a simple yet horrific accident.
Penelope Cruz
The Spanish-born actress has been a superstar in the industry for more than three decades. Over the years, she has earned herself several awards making her one of the most successful email actors of the 20th century. Penelope Cruz made a striking entrance in this black lace Ralph & Russo gown.
The off-the-shoulder dress with full-length lace sleeves radiates elegance. At the 75th Golden Globes on January 7, the red carpet saw mostly black gowns in recognition of Time’s Up, a legal defense organization for women. All but three red carpet invitees dressed in the all-black theme. Cruz paired her gown with Christian Louboutin heels and sparkled with Atelier Swarovski.
Nicole Kidman
After her divorce from fellow actor Tom Cruise, Kidman gave love another try. And we are all happy that she did. She has been married to country singer Keith Urban since 2006, and look how wonderfully beautiful she looks. Kidman is a very tall woman, and she knows it; however, this does not stop her from wearing dresses that make her look even more.
She is seen here in a collar-neck black gown, revealing her shoulders and adorning the entire look with her magnetic smile. She is for sure one of a kind, and the long dress highlights it all.
Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj is no stranger to dressing provocatively, and most people are used to her showing off various aspects of her physique. After all, she does this on a regular basis. However, the Met Gala in 2016 was a whole different story. For this event, Nicki donned an outfit that really did raise eyebrows.
While the low-cut aspect was something that most people could cope with, it was the ties and the belt aspects that really had people shocked. Were her arms strapped down? How on earth would she get on with that? Nicki is famous for wearing some truly headline-stealing dresses - and this is right up there.
Jennifer Aniston
Before we start spilling gossip about loveable Jen, we must pay attention to her choice of the little black dress. The deep slint turns this gown from a classic piece to a daring desire and shows us Jennifer Aniston at one of her best appearances. Jennifer Aniston has endured her share of tabloid headlines. Flaring up first when Brad Pitt dumped her for Angelina Jolie, they raged again with rumors of secret rendezvous and a possible reunion.
Hubby number two, Justin Theroux, dumped his girlfriend of 11 years for Jen. At first, it seemed like she finally found a safe haven. And then, plot twist, Justin and Jen announced their divorce in February 2018, ending a not-quite three-year marriage.
Saoirse Ronan
This custom Atelier Versace gown was modified for Saoirse Ronan. A team of all-women worked on the “Lady Bird” actress’ Golden Globe look. From makeup to designers, Ronan requested women create her style. The originally all-black asymmetrical Atelier Versace was altered most noticeably with bold silver accents on the left shoulder and up the right side.
Her team chose Cartier jewels. The diamond and sapphire drop earrings set off her eyes, and a wide cuff bracelet completes the silver adornment. Ronan rose to fame after starring in the 2007 movie "Atonement," and since then, she had added a few notable screen moments to her resume.
Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has been working in the music world for years now and she is constantly trying to reinvent herself when it comes to her sound and her fashion choices. While Taylor Swift has had a number of styles that we love, this modern and revealing dress is not one of our favorites.
Her blunt haircut and the asymmetrical lines and slits on the dress make it seem like she just walked out of a time machine. These days the talented star is working on directing, moving, and writing new lyrics, and continues to amaze us in magnificent black dresses.
Katie Holmes
Katie Holmes was married to Tom Cruise from 2006 to 2012, and her most notable role was in the television series "Dawson's Creek." Later, Holmes made a transition to film, where she achieved success and became one of the most notable actresses in the industry.
As for her choice of the black dress on the red carpet, Katie went for a more sophisticated look and amazed the crowds with this unique piece. We are still unsure if it's a one-piece overall or a cute top with long-falling pants. Either way, we love the uniqueness, and we love her thinking out of the box.
Angelina Jolie
You may expect a look like this from Megan Fox or Blake Lively but not Angelina Jolie, right? In 2012 her high-slit Atelier Versace gown went viral. She paired this dress with Salvatore Ferragamo's custom-made black velvet peep-toe pumps. We admire her courage and bravery to wear something like this!
Angelina Jolie has always been one to surprise us; she has always been the outspoken one about things that mattered to her and values she was not willing to overpass. To this day, Jolie is very much active in courses close to her heart and does whatever she can to make a difference.
The Olsen twins
If you have searched with no success for the Olsen twins on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, you can rest at ease as the two don't have accounts on either. They said that they have spent all of their adult lives trying to escape from the public eye, and opening accounts would go against all they have been fighting for. They insist on keeping their fans out and not even giving a controlled glimpse of what's been going on in their lives.
Paparazzi will forever follow, and the flash will forever be there, so the twins insist on controlling whatever they can. And they can. Thankfully we have professional photography to give us a glimpse of the two in what we call their choice of black dress.
Chrissy Teigen
Chrissy chose an all-black ensemble for that big night, going with a black dress along with a pair of tasseled earrings to complete the look. Despite the shiny dress, the one thing to stand out is the pair of earrings she put on for the big night. She chose a pair of BaubleBar earrings that look as if they cost more than your college tuition, but the truth is you can get yours too!
There are four shades for you to choose from, and all you need is $38 in your bank account. Now back to the dress. It's chic, it has style, and when you look like Chrissy Teigen, you can get away with anything.
Gigi Hadid
Between Gigi and her sister Bella, we are not sure who turns heads more. It does not matter, though, because these two sisters are drop-dead gorgeous. Regardless of the event they are attending, they always look naturally beautiful. When Gigi attended the Vanity Fair party, she wore a cut-out dress that everyone seemed to love.
We are not sure that anyone could have pulled this off; however, on her, the very unique design seems to fit perfectly. These days the models continue to walk the runway and turn heads no matter where she goes and what black dress she is wearing.
Busy Philipps
Adrianna Papell has a knack for celebrities looking for something cheap to bring to the red carpet, and Busy Phillips falls into that category. Busy Phillips chose a clutch from Papell that looks more than what it actually costs. The star apparently made the right choice with her clutch, as you don't need a diamond-studded bag to hold your phone and makeup.
The accessories that Busy Phillips chose went elegantly with the simple yet classic design of her dress. The sleeveless gown was made from glittering fabric which made Phillips shine to a distance. Clearly, she knows how to rock black.
Bella Hadid
There is so much we can say about Bella Hadid. She has been on almost 30 covers of Vogue magazine, she was named Model of the Year by the British Fashion Council, she is considered to be one of the most influential people in the world, and she looks, like always, amazingly beautiful in this black dress.
Bella is no foul and knew that she didn't have to wear something glittering or with an outrageous design, and the simpler the dress, the more prestige she would look. The long slit down the gown reveals the full-length boots she wore, an excellent choice in our opinion.
Kim Kardashian
This would have worked great for the premiere of any "Matrix" flick, but otherwise, it's a bit too futuristic for us. Kim wore this for the People's Choice Awards.
Carmen Electra
Carmen Electra certainly was bearing all in this barely-there ensemble. While the front of the dress is pretty demure, the side...slit... is shocking, to say the least. To be completely honest, if we looked half as incredible as Miss Electra does, we would be wearing this dress in a heartbeat!
Electra was born Tara Leigh Patrick, and after arriving in Hollywood, she wanted a name that would fit the scene. She was discovered by the one and only Price, who auditioned for an all-girl band back in the 1990s. The entertainment world is definitely not the same without him, and could you imagine what the world would have been without her?
RuPaul
RuPaul is the ultimate drag queen, author, talk show host, and actor extraordinaire. Despite wearing many hats, this multi-talented superstar looks stunning every time. And he brought his A-game to the 1993 VMA looking all kinds of fabulous. No surprises there! Sadly, most people remember less of the dress and more of the infamous altercation between RuPaul and Milton Berle.
Berle allegedly mistreated RuPaul backstage before their on-camera appearance together at the show. Berle then went on stage and inappropriately touched Mama Ru, referring to him with an offensive pronoun. RuPaul was having none of it, of course, and they certainly should not.
Kourtney Kardashian
We are sure that Kourtney had everybody at the 2017 Grammy Gala turning heads, but not necessarily for the right reasons. Yes, the Kardashian sister does have a great body, but wrapping it up in black, partly sheer fabric that looks ripped in all the wrong places is not the way to go.
The dress starts with a great shape in the cleavage area but quickly descends into a mess of strings and awkward shapes that have to make you wonder if her kids did not mistake the gown for an arts and crafts project. And we're sure that Travis was also wearing black, in some shape or form.
Gabrielle Union
The spokesmodel is a star that could make anything look good, which has led to the brand choosing her to wear their dresses for some time now. It was the same this time around, too, as New York and Co offered her this combination of clothing for her red carpet appearance.
The collection features a romper and jumpsuit in an all-black style, and despite it looking cool, things will definitely get hot with this black outfit. And we love how that golden purse just pops in her hand. These days, Gabrielle is a best-selling author, outspoken activist, and, most importantly, a devoted mother.
Kate Winslet
The British beauty made her breakthrough back in 1994, more than 3 decades ago. She has since amassed us with her remarkable acting abilities, holding to her name titles such as "The Dressmaker," "The Holiday" and the one and only, "Titanic." Over the years, she had also shared her sophisticated sense of fashion. Kate Winslet arrived at the Golden Globe Awards in 2009 simply elegant. She looked winning in an Empire Yves Saint-Laurent gown.
It exuded sophistication in black. Her clutch and shoes were likewise made by YSL. Glittering around her wrist and hanging from the tie around her waist are diamonds by Chopard. Winslet was all about the win at the awards event. She went home with not one but two Golden Globes!
Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron is wearing an over-the-knee lace dress with a unique and exquisite neckline. We are fascinated by the way she looks, and we feel that we must share the story of how this love affair all began. When the holidays rolled around in December of 2013, Sean Penn set his eyes on a new leading lady and entered into a romance with the beautiful and talented Charlize Theron.
This pairing seemed much more serious than some of his previous endeavors, such as his fling with Scarlett Johannsson, and rumors began to circulate about the two A-listers tying the knot. But was there any truth to those rumors? Apparently, yes, as Sean confirmed, the two were, in fact, engaged. Penn very much wanted things with Theron to work out and was quoted as calling her the “love of his life.”
Reese Witherspoon
Here’s a '00s girl who went on to have a very successful career, with two Golden Globe awards, a BAFTA, an Emmy, and an Oscar. Reese Witherspoon starred in some of the 00s' most famous films. She landed leading roles in hits such as the "Legally Blonde" film franchise, "Walk the Line," and "Wild."
While she got her start in the 2000s, she got even bigger later on with roles in shows like "Big Little Lies" and "The Morning Show." Whitherspoon is wearing a relatively modest dress with a conservative neckline and modest sleeves; however, the button park is fun a free, giving the star a light and bubbly appearance.
Jennifer Aniston
If it was the nineties and you looked at a rumor mag or the papers, you had a pretty good chance of seeing a picture of Jennifer Aniston. She was huge because of “Friends,” being married to Brad Pitt for a while, and...some other reasons, probably.
Despite just being one of six members of the main cast of one of the most popular franchises ever, she seemed to get all the attention. This picture has her in a little black dress in 1997 as she arrives at a Cosmopolitan Magazine party, looking ready to make everyone around her pleased to be there.
Whitney Huston
In 2009 Whitney Huston starred in one of her last movies, "I Look to You." The film gave Whitney tremendous critical acclaim and some of the best reviews she had received so far. The San Francisco Chronicle called her performance "divine" and "angelic," with Whitney displaying a natural talent for being two things at once—outrageously flirtatious and devout.
Whitney received an NAACP Image Award nomination once again and won for Outstanding Actress in Motion Picture. Huston is seen here in a tight fit, a partly transparent and partly solid black long dress, which empowers the diva and gives her a tall and glamorous touch, which she well deserved.
Courtney Cox
Courtney Cox is known for sporting all-black looks on the red carpet. A classic look, sure, but it runs the risk of getting boring. But Cox owns her reputation, and after a couple of decades, we know what to expect. Honoring George Clooney at the 46th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala, Cox took the stage alongside "Friends" costar Jennifer Aniston in similar floor-length, sleeveless black numbers.
Cox will forever be remembered as part of our favorite sitcom, "Friends," and we're sure that if Monicca were around, she would have had a black dress for every occasion in the book. Casual, black tie, sunny daily, rainy daily, and red carpet.
Ashanti
Proving that she still has what it takes to turn heads on the red carpet, Ashanti wore this strappy number to the 2021 MTV VMAs. While fans were happy to see their favorite R&B singer back in the music scene, some were confused by her choice of dress.
With so many straps, buckles, and harnesses, we imagine that it must have taken ages for her to get dressed. We can’t imagine how difficult taking a bathroom break must have been! We hope that she had assistants on hand to help. Ashanti is R&B royalty, and this appearance perfectly demonstrates that.
Diana Ross
Diana Ross made her fame with the 1960s Motown act, The Supremes. Then Ross went on to have an extremely successful solo career, with chart-topping hits like “Endless Love” and “I’m Coming Out.” Ross has been nominated for 11 Grammy Awards, winning a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. In 1988, Diana Ross attended the 30th Annual Grammy Awards in a stunning black sleeveless dress with gold and sequin details.
But, of course, let’s not forget her gorgeous black mane that goes with any outfit. For more than 70 years, Ross has been part of the industry, and over the years, her songs have spent a total of 600 weeks on the chats. Impressive.
Rita Ora
The British singer and songwriter barged in 2012 with her song "Hot Right Now," and since then, she hasn't stopped; however, there is more to her than just tunes. Keeping up with the sheer-dress trend, Rita Ora made us do a double-take when she walked the red carpet in a stunning Giuseppe Zanotti dress.
Though Rita joked that she chose the revealing dress because of the weather, we can’t deny that this dress is simply a work of art. Unique squiggly lines intricately embroidered onto the sheer fabric of the gown prevented the singer from having a wardrobe malfunction by discreetly covering certain areas. This dress is the best example of “if you’ve got it, flaunt it!”
Adriana Lima
This Afro-Brazilian beauty is best known for her amazing modeling career as a Victoria's Secret Angel from 1999 all the way up to 2018. This makes Adriana Lima the world's longest-running model, thanks to the 38-year-old model's ageless look and sharp business acumen. Lima was named "the most valuable Victoria's Secret Angel" in 2017.
Her 2008 Superbowl Victoria's Secret ad was the most-viewed ad of the entire game, having been watched by over 100 million viewers. Lima is seen in this photo in a dress we believe was custom-made for her. Not all women could have gotten away with such an appearance.
Mahira Khan
Mahira Khan made history when she became the first Pakistani celebrity to hit 5 million Instagram followers. The talented actress is best known for portraying the role of Khirad Ehsan in Momina Duraid's "Humsafar," for which she received numerous accolades, including Lux Style Awards for Best Television Actress.
Khan is considered one of Pakistan's most popular and highest-paid actresses. She has also been named the Most Beautiful Woman in Pakistan. She also began her singing career in 2017. Without a doubt, the dress she is wearing has a classic cut and represents tradition and somewhat royalty, which she wears uncompromisingly to perfection.
Kendall Jenner
Kendall Jenner might usually be the least dramatic member of the Kardashian-Jenner family, but in this instance at the Much Music Awards red carpet, she upped the drama a little with the help of this dress – which has slits all the way up to her hip bones.
While it is a little over the top, Kendall sure looks stunning, and her legs seem to go on forever. It’s no wonder this Kardashian-Jenner sister is a world-famous model! Jenner spent more than 15 years on "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" between 2007-2021. Just like her sister Kylie, Kendall is a master at rocking the black.
Maggie Gyllenhaal
Maggie's first acting roles were in her father's films, in which she co-starred with her famous brother, Jake Gyllenhaal. Her first big acting debut, though, was in the cult classic, "Donnie Darko," in 2001. Her next big role was in 2002's "Secretary." From then on, she went on to star in "Sherrybaby," "The Dark Night," "Mona Lisa Smile," "Away We Go," "Stranger Than Fiction," and many more.
Since the 00s, she moved on to doing bigger and greater things, like directing her own movies. Even in the dresses she chooses, and as we can see in this photo of her, Gyllenhaal sometimes likes to keep things simple, with only a hint of sophistication.
Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman
They have one of the most prominent bestie friendships in the business. They met filming "Flirting" in 1991, which means the two celebrated Aussies have known each other since they were teens. They call it a sisterhood. “And we’re like sisters. I mean, we’ve known each other for so long, through so many things,” Nicole Kidman said of her friend at the 2015 Women in Film awards show.
It’s all about love and respect. Before attending the event, the two are seen here in; Kidman and Watts planned what the black dress would look like. They aren't identical; however, they match and complete each other only in a way BFFs could.
Taylor Hill
When she's not uploading cute pictures with her dog Tate to her 13 million Instagram followers, Taylor Hill spends her time modeling as a Victoria's Secret Angel. Born in Palatine, Illinois, Hill was a gymnast before becoming a model. She was also discovered at a very young age, 14 in fact, when she was in a barn in Granby, Colorado. Her pick of dresses shows how mature this young lady is, and the black dress is timeless and could have been seen by any huge Hollywood star.
Hey, those piercing eyes and charming smile will trap you anywhere. The model also made a small appearance in the 2016 psychological horror film, 'The Neon Demon,' but makes sure to attend each year's "Victoria's Secret Fashion Show" on TV.
Jonathan Van Ness
The MTV VMAs are a place to have fun with fashion and express yourself, and no one got that message more than television personality and hairdresser extraordinaire Jonathan Van Ness. The "Queer Eye" co-host paired an elegant black romper with an elaborately embroidered Atelier by Frang black cape that would make any Disney villain jealous. Exuding confidence, Jonathan shows us that our favorite red carpet outfits are sometimes the least expected.
We totally think his co-host and style expert, Tan France, would approve of this fun outfit. It is not easy slipping a masculine figure into a dress design for more Pettit features; however, under the circumstances, Van Ness did a pretty good job.
Britney Spears
From pop princess to leather diva, Britney Spears decided to shed her innocent image with this leather outfit, complete with a matching hat. Though her tiny studded dress, gloves, and lace-up heels wouldn’t get a second look today, decades ago, this look was considered quite edgy — especially for Britney Spears.
While her bold look was controversial, the real focus was on her interaction with the late pop icon Michael Jackson. After calling him the “Artist of the Millennium,” the king of pop was confused by Britney Spears’s praise and thought it was an award. Awkward would be an understatement here!
Emma Watson
When we first saw Emma Watson as the intelligent and book-smart Hermione Granger, we knew that this was one actress to follow. Watson didn’t disappoint and matured into a leading actress, model, and activist, and went on to win British Artist of the Year in 2014. Emma Watson is a great example of what beauty and brains look like, and has worked extensively to promote women’s rights.
When asked about the impact of her role as Hermione, she said, “Young girls are told you have to be the delicate princess. Hermione taught them that you can be the warrior,” too. As you can see here, although Watson chose a simple, clean-cut gown, she added her personal touch with a dazzling neckpiece, turning the dress into something completely different.
Hailey Bieber
It’s one thing to read mean messages on social media; it’s another thing when those same internet “trolls” or “haters” want to harass you in real life. At the 2021 Met Gala, as Justin and Hailey Bieber were walking the red carpet, they were met with a throng of Selena Gomez fans who chanted “Selena” at the couple.
The awkward moment quickly went viral on TikTok, much to their embarrassment. On this red carpet, Hailey knew she had to amaze the audience, and so she did (how could she not be in such a dress). Her cleavage is adorned with small years which gives the own that special extra touch it sometimes needs.
Kat Dennings
Katherine Victoria Litwack's beauty makes our jaws drop every time she appears in film screenings. The actress, known professionally as Kat Dennings, made her acting debut in HBO's "Sex and the City," by playing an obnoxious 13-year-old who hires Samantha to handle PR for her Bat Mitzvah. Dennings's career in front of the cameras started three years before her debut on "Sex and the City" when she was just ten years old.
Her first-ever commercial was an ad for potato chips. Today, we know her better for her performance as the busty waitress, Max Black, from "2 Broke Girls" (2011). When it comes to her dress, there is not a lot we can say. It is clear she liked to sit on the safe side, with a full-length gown, and only decorating her shoulders and arms with a uniquely defined design.
