Who knew that calling a movie named Knocked Up “a little bit sexist” would explode in someone’s face? That it would cause another to “expect an apology” and go so far as to say he can “respect the fact that perhaps she realizes that it has hurt her career.”
Well, that’s what happened. To be fair, her full statement includes, “It paints women as these shrews, who are humorless and uptight, while the men are seen as loveable, goofy, fun-loving guys.”
Bette Midler and 50 Cent
These two hooked up to bring a community garden to 50 Cent’s old Jamaica Queens ’hood and stayed together to bring nature to poor neighborhoods all around NYC. The gardens benefit neighborhood children as living classrooms. It’s all good.
The diva comedian and the rapper grew very close over the years. “Bette Midler is on my list of my favorite people in the world,” the rapper told Instagram followers. The collaboration album is yet to come.
Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon
These two have actually done a music collaboration. They’ve been best buds for almost 20 years, ever since SNL. Just recently the two released “Quarantine Remix.”
After the music video launch, Fallon gushed, “Dude, I miss you and I can’t wait to see you in person and give you a hug, man.”
Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire
Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire bonded around their similar backgrounds when they were 12. They grew up in the Hollywood acting scene and were raised by single moms in Los Angeles.
The friendship endured. Naturally, it was a no-brainer portraying the friendship of Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby.
Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King
Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King’s relationship is legendary. They went from being colleagues to best friends overnight. They were working at a local TV news station when a snowstorm hit.
Oprah invited Gayle to stay for the night, but they didn’t sleep much. Instead, they pulled an all-nighter, not a wink, chatting into the wee hours of the morning. That was back in 1976 and they’re still BFFs to this day.
Amy Poehler and Tina Fey
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler met a long time ago, way before SNL. When the talented improv artists were introduced at the ImprovOlympic in Chicago at a 1993 theater class, Amy said Tina was just like her “but with brown hair.”
Since then, they’ve been like two peas in a pod.
Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams
Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams don’t just play sisters on Game of Thrones, in real-life they are inseparable. Maisie calls it “the purest form of true, true friendship.”
They grew up together on the set, and behind the scenes, the Stark sisters practically lived together. At New York Comic Con, Sophie spilled, “We just used to sit there and eat and watch stupid videos.”
Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz
Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz have been best friends since teens. They met at a coffee shop that 16-year-old Cameron worked at. “We’re like more than best friends, she’s my sister,” Drew told ET.
“We’ve had the majority of our lives spent side by side, really going through what real life is, which is an everyday high and low and we just have each other’s backs.” In Charlie’s Angels, the two genuinely brought that dynamic to the screen.
Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston
Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston found each other on Thor. Their bickers and fights and sibling rivalry ended there, but they say they used their close bond to create those characters. Off-screen they are tight.
“It’s quite literally a bromance,” Chris shared on SNL. Here’s to a lifetime of beautiful ‘broments!’
Kim Kardashian and Jonathan Cheban
Kim Kardashian and Jonathan Cheban have been friends ever since they were seated next to each other at a birthday party. It’s been a sweet relationship. “We literally don’t fight,” Jonathan told Daily Mail.
There’s only been one fight in all these years and that’s when Jonathon feared Kim had sided with his business partner. “That’s the only time I didn’t answer her calls, I was furious about it,” he said.
Julianne Hough and Nina Dobrev
Julianne Hough and Nina Dobrev have been “like joined—connected at the hip” ever since stylist Riawna Capri insisted they meet. Quarantine has been a challenge. Julianne shared, “Missing this babe of a best friend basking in the full moon beauty and light” on Instagram earlier this year.
The Vampire Diaries star answers back, “Julianne is such a positive, awesome person. She has an infectious energy that you just want to be around.”
Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr.
These two met on the set of Sherlock Holmes. RDJ has a lot of friends in Hollywood, but Jude Law is one of his besties. Their closeness has piqued curiosity. When Daily Echo put it to them in 2011, RDJ took it over the top with a facetious spill about their private life.
He said the two have been sharing a suite with a single bed. “We prefer two sinks so we can wash up before and after our nuptials.” The tale ended with a burst of laughter that said a lot about their friendship.
Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox
They lived the Friends anthem. Courteney’s friendship has been like a refuge for Jennifer’s personal struggles. “Without giving away too much of our personal lives, all I can say is she’s been there for me through the ups and downs.”
Today they are seen frequently gushing over each other on Instagram, 30 years on.
Jay Z and Kanye West
They started with a mentor relationship. Jay Z told BBC “[It’s] a big brother thing and a respect thing. It’s always a good experience.” Except when it’s not. Kanye dissed Jay Z for marrying Kim Kardashian and, separately, a 2017 lawsuit over music rights caused tension.
The legal spat was resolved in 2019. On top of that, politically, they are not on the same page. Yet the friendship has endured through thick and thin.
Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez
These diva BFFs adore each other. They’ve collaborated on music projects and have shared a tight bond for ten years. Airing a snippet of their sweet friendship on Instagram, Taylor Swift praised her younger friend writing, “To the person I could call at any time of day, who has been there no matter what…. you absolutely KILLED IT tonight . . .”.
Selena’s Instagram page often features friend photos of Taylor with notes like, “I love you Tay.”
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck
They met as childhood friends at the Little League fields. Just a couple of blokes from Boston, their friendship grew around their love of the city and the Red Sox. They teamed up to do small acting and directing jobs.
Soon after, a little pet project called Good Will Hunting catapulted them both to fame. They went from being “two idiots in our basement writing this thing,” as Ben explains it, to Oscar winners.
Natalie Portman and Rashida Jones
Besides hanging out together, the two have taken a stand against sexual harassment appearing at the 2018 Makers Conference. Participating in the “Time’s Up” panel, Natalie spoke about the camaraderie of women that emboldens them to speak the truth.
Natalie said she only had Rashida to rely on before the conference.
Jon Hamm and Paul Rudd
They met studying theater at the University of Kansas. One of their favorite friend stories comes from there. Paul Rudd says they were in the dorm playing Trivial Pursuit when Jon Hamm ameliorated his ego in front of his new girlfriend.
He said the Mad Men star who was trying to impress his girl and completely “emasculated” him with his knowledge. “I felt so lame, I started reading atlases,” Jon admitted.
Jennifer Aniston and Ellen DeGeneres
They aren’t shy about their friendship. It goes back a long time. Jennifer was Ellen’s very first guest and to this day she visits The Ellen DeGeneres Show frequently. They met at Ellen’s birthday party, leaving Jennifer in awe.
Later, on Ellen Jenn recalled, “I had never seen humor like that. I laughed so hard,” On that appearance, the Friends star also shared, “You hit my funny button like nobody else.”
Reese Witherspoon and Kate Winslet
These two stars met in 2007 as neighbors. Kate moved into Reese’s neighborhood and stopped by to introduce herself.
She rang the doorbell and asked for a playdate for their kids and a glass of wine. Kate was thrilled with her good fortune.
Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence
They say loyalty is the cornerstone of their friendship. They’re just like family and they have a ton of fun hanging out together. Emma told W magazine, “Do you understand that spending time with us is just us sitting and screaming at each other?”
Jennifer adds, “We just scream at each other. We’re both hoarse after we hang out. I can’t imagine what it must be like for other people.”
Cara Delevingne and Kendall Jenner
They feel that friendship is “sacred” and that’s why the two models like to keep theirs as private as possible.
Delevingne did divulge that she adores the friendship, “It just feels incredible when you’re not alone when you’re facing the world with someone else.”
Donald Faison and Zach Braff
They may have left Scrubs behind, but their bromance is still brewing. In fact, it’s one of the strongest brews in bromance history. Clearly fluent in bro-ology, Donald instructs, “The only reason we have a real bromance is that we're genuinely fond of each other. [Zach’s] my best friend. I’m really fond of that man, I’m not ashamed to say it.”
As tight friends, they love to play pranks. Look no further than this parody Vogue cover.
Salma Hayek and Penélope Cruz
This pair of beauties have shared a loving friendship since 2001. The smashing Latinas are sometimes mistaken for twins and even as lovers, though Penélope quashed that myth soundly in front of a blushing David Letterman when he posed it. They even share pet names for each other.
One of them is “huevo,” says Penélope. (It means lazy!) As young ladies, they would call each other huevos for sleeping in late.
Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman
They have one of the most prominent bestie friendships in the business. They met filming Flirting in 1991, which means the two celebrated Aussies have known each other since they were teens. They call it a sisterhood.
“And we’re like sisters. I mean, we’ve known each other for so long, through so many things,” Nicole Kidman said of her friend at the 2015 Women in a Film awards show. It’s all about love and respect.
BJ Novak and Mindy Kaling
They first shared a lot of laughs writing for The Office. The two comedians also played a couple on the show with a relationship that was very similar to theirs. And, though the dating didn’t last, the pair are loyal best buds. Mindy calls the friendship “a blessing.”
BJ told EW, “We are inseparable as friends and we also have a lot of chemistry between us, but right now we’re not dating.” He went on to say, whenever they date, the other person feels very awkward around the two BFFs.
Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel
They met shooting Valentine’s Day in 2010. The cast dubbed the playful bosom buddies “Laverne and Shirley.” The actresses really connected on the film, mostly because it was nice to have feminine companionship. “We don’t work with a lot of women on our films,” Jennifer pointed out.
She said it’s usually one woman and a bunch of men. “So on this film, it was great to have someone like Jessica around, even though most of our scenes as best friends were over the phone.”
Bad Blood
Famous friendships are a lot of fun. But what happens when things go the other way? We may not hear of them as much, but there are some celebrities who have enduring rivalries. For whatever reason, these celebrities just could not get along, while many have successfully kept their tiffs under wraps, others have displayed their dirty laundry for all to see.
Sylvester Stallone and Richard Gere
They may have started off on the wrong foot but eventually, they became friends. Long story short, Gere got fired from a 1974 film because Stallone didn’t like him, the last straw being the time Gere dripped greasy chicken and mustard juice on Stallone’s pants, even after a stern warning.
“If it gets on my pants, you’re gonna know about it.” Gere took an elbow to the head and was kicked out of the car they were in. This feud was lit.
Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker
It makes sense that this pair did not want their behind-the-scenes drama to spill out into the media space, but it did. The mysterious tension simmered backstage and bubbled up when Kim Cattrall refused to do a third Sex and the City movie. Sarah Jessica Parker complained to Ellen in 2018 that Kim killed off the movie, adding, Kim “could have been nicer.” It blew up on Twitter after Kim’s brother died tragically and SJP offered delayed condolences.
Furious, Kim spilled that SATC ended due to “mean girl culture” and that SJP was “cruel,” “then and now.” She said they are not friends and concluded with one last burn, “. . . don't exploit our tragedy in order to regain your ‘nice girl’ persona.”
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford
They battled it out until death, with Joan Crawford passing away first. Bette Davis is rumored to have said, “good” in response, but it was Crawford who instigated the feud. As the reigning “It” actress of the Golden Age, she did everything to outshine the rising starlet.
She even announced her divorce to coincide with Bette’s film debut, dimming the film’s media spotlight and flattening its box office run, and that’s how it started. Not to mention that time Crawford got remarried to the man Davis loved. It was brutal.
Bruce Willis and Kevin Smith
Bruce Willis and Kevin Smith’s ego battle extravaganza blew up making Cop Out. The two will never be friends. At the wrap party, after a tenuous production effort which nearly came to blows, Kevin Smith said, “I want to thank everyone who worked on the film, except for Bruce Willis . . . "
Willis wasn’t there. He had a prior, more important, engagement. Willis finally said, “Sometimes you just don’t get along.” Smith, whose childhood dream was to work with Bruce Willis, called the experience “soul-crushing.”
Leo DiCaprio and Claire Danes
Claire Danes was not intimidated by her 22-year-old heartthrob love interest, even though she was just 16. In fact, she considered him irritating and immature while filming Romeo + Juliet.
She found his incessant pranks annoying and they rarely spoke once cameras stopped. Unable to impress the girl, DiCaprio decided she was uptight and annoying.
Bill Murray and Lucy Liu
It appears that Bill Murray traversed a rough spot while making that film. He told the Times of London that director McG “deserves to die” (for accusing him of a head-butt). To the point, the comedian clashed with Lucy Liu on set, who he accused of ineptitude. She fought back with fists flying. During the entire filming, the two stars gave each other the cold shoulder.
But that was nothing compared with the time Murray burst out, “What in the hell are you doing here? You can’t act!” The spat sealed the deal. Murray refused to be Bosley in the sequel.
Katherine Heigl and Judd Apatow
Who knew that calling a movie named Knocked Up “a little bit sexist” would explode in someone’s face? That it would cause another to “expect an apology” and go so far as to say he can “respect the fact that perhaps she realizes that it has hurt her career.”
Well, that’s what happened. To be fair, her full statement includes, “It paints women as these shrews, who are humorless and uptight, while the men are seen as loveable, goofy, fun-loving guys.”
LL Cool J and Jamie Foxx
Their famous tiff happened during the filming of "Any Given Sunday" in 1999. A little too much method acting on the football field led to a fistfight.
LL tells his side, “I’ma keep it 100 with you. You want me to keep it 100—I’m gonna keep it 100 He punched me in the face.” But the tussle ended with Jamie Foxx completely knocked out.
Kiefer Sutherland and Freddie Prinze Jr
They did not enjoy working with each other, er, Freddie Prinze Jr couldn’t stand working with the ’80s movie icon. He said, “Kiefer was one of the most unprofessional guys to work with in the world.”
Needless to say, Prinze did not stay with 24 for the Live Another Day conclusion. And, as far as Sutherland is concerned, according to his publicist, “Kiefer enjoyed working with Freddie and wishes him the best.” No sense in getting into all of that “unprofessionalism!”
Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron
They feuded until they witnessed the massive success of Mad Max. The stress of filming under harsh conditions in the middle of the Nairobi desert, not understanding the point of the film or what they were doing, their hostility toward each other only help make it what it was. Out on the primitive set, everything was about survival.
“If we were chum-chum, maybe the movie would have been 10 times worse,” Charlize laughed relaying background details to WSJ. Tom Hardy says the pressure was “overwhelming” and that they were “in over their heads.”
Alec Baldwin and Shia LaBeouf
This pair was cast for the Broadway show Orphans, but only one man was left standing. Alec Baldwin was tired of dealing with the arrogant attitude of Shia LaBeouf who crowed about having all his lines down. He heckled the older actor for not memorizing the script and stayed in character until one of them had to go, and it wasn’t going to be Baldwin.
The latter said he was “attacked,” and LaBeouf later admitted that he felt his job as an actor was to “intimidate the f*ck out of Baldwin.” It didn’t go well for him.
Sharon Stone and William Baldwin
Perhaps they regret making Silver. Sharon Stone’s animosity toward William Baldwin was not subtle. She hated kissing him. One time, while filming the erotic thriller, she chomped down on his tongue with vigor as a signal for him to stop kissing her.
Speaking pained him for a week! Beyond that, she would rush for the mouth wash after each make-out scene.
Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder
They started out as friends. When the Vampire Diaries lovers became real-life lovers, fans could not get enough of it. When they broke up, the drama only exploded.
By now, the awkward and messy relationship fallout has been resolved. A happy ending, friends again!
James Franco and Tyrese Gibson
These two came to blows shooting Annapolis. Tyrese let loose some details years later. “I didn’t get along with James Franco, but that’s something else” according to The Jasmine Brand. He went on to say, “We actually got in a fight and they had to shut down production for a whole day.”
On his end, Franco just wants to be friends, admitting he was kind of a “jerk.” (He’s one of those method actors.) Tyrese is not over it. “I never want to work with him again,” he said in 2007, “It felt very personal.”
Teri Hatcher and the Desperate Housewives cast
They are BFF All-Stars on TV. But behind-the-scenes Terri Hatcher was the odd-woman out. Now that the show has ended and Felicity Huffman has been charged with college admission corruption, the bullying and toxic environment of the ’90s show has spilled everywhere.
Nicollette Sheridan once called Teri the “meanest woman in the world.” And, for example, the cast organized her out of everything, even when it came to casting crew gift-giving.
Tina Fey and Paris Hilton
Tina Fey is known for her rant against the heiress diva. Disgusted by Paris Hilton’s SNL host invite, Fey unloaded, “She’s unbelievably dumb and so proud of how dumb she is.
She looks like a tranny up close.” She goes on about her “nasty wads of Barbie hair.” If Hilton bit back, it’s yet to be seen. Perhaps she enjoyed the headline attention.
David O. Russell and George Clooney
This “clash of the egos” was real. Amid filming a battle scene with bullets whizzing, explosions exploding and aircraft hovering, George Clooney spotted director David Russell screaming at some extras so they could hear his voice above the din.
Clooney rushes over like a superhero to save the poor extras. After a few words, they’re rolling on the ground fighting “the dumb fight.”
Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey
Their rivalry got lit on American Idol. Mariah was chosen as a judge first. A couple of months later, Nicki Minaj joined the panel. Sparks flew. During an audition in 2012, the divas clashed. The expletive-laden discussion prompted Minaj to say, “I told them, I’m not putting up with her highness over there.”
First of all, she did not want to be called “gangster.” Mariah had a few other choice words. She griped, “I don't get to see my kids because you decided to act like a crazy diva.” The show had to wrap for the day.
Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin
They hosted NYC’s New Year’s Eve show for 10 years. The playful friendship fell into the abyss after Kathy Griffin posted a gruesome photo of herself holding a photoshopped image of Donald Trump’s decapitated head. She was fired from the gig after Anderson spoke out against it.
Griffin was devastated saying, “It still hurts. I mean, I really loved him. I don’t have a punchline for that.” Cooper says he wishes her the best but there’s no end in sight for this riff.
Charlie Sheen and Selma Blair
These two will never work together again. Their love-hate relationship snapped via text. Charlie Sheen fired his Anger Management co-star in a rage without sparing the c-word. He flipped out on her for criticizing his work ethic. Sheen, who is also the executive producer, abruptly wrote the role of his therapist out of the show.
Some sources say Selma Blair went outside of production to complain about his lackadaisical approach to work.
Elton John and Madonna
These two famous musicians have sparred off and on since 2002. To be honest, it was Elton John who started it. He ridiculed her for lip-synching (before it was legit) joking that all lip-synchers need to be shot! He also called her Die Another Day 007 track, “the worst theme ever for a Bond movie.”
On her part, Madonna returned Christmas cards two years in a row and snubbed his offer to perform at his bachelor’s party at a West End nightclub. He went after her again when she criticized Gaga for imitating her style with these words: “ungracious and nasty.”
Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks
They shared the limelight as ’90s supermodels although, truth be told, as Tyra claims, Naomi tried to push her out. She didn’t want there to be two black supermodels. Tyra said the already established supermodel did “everything she could to make me go away.” In 2005, the two buried the hatchet.
Tyra invited Naomi to join her on The Tyra Banks Show to talk and, good news, after an hour-long conversation, they resolved it then and there.
