Le Marché Des Enfants Rouges — The Oldest Food Market in Paris

There are other marketplaces in Paris, but Le Marché des Enfants Rouges is arguably the most special one, with its overhead roof and its variety of delectable specialties to sample. Established in 1628 as the "Petit marché du Marais," it is situated at 39 Rue de Bretagne in the Marais district of Paris' 3rd arrondissement, and is known for its artisanal products. Moreover, since 1982, the market has been designated as a historic monument. The market was refurbished towards the end of the 1990s after it had been threatened with demolition in the previous decade. After some time had passed, the market was given the name "Enfants-Rouges," which translates to "Market of the Red Children" in French.

There is a section of the Marché des Enfants-Rouges that resembles a conventional food market — imagine fresh vegetables, fruits, seafood, and meat. Then you also have a large selection of organic items. The majority of the community's food shopping is done here.

The Variety Is Incredible

The fact that you may choose from a variety of caterers with diverse specialties such as Japanese, Italian, Moroccan, or Lebanese cuisine is the most notable characteristic of le Marché des Enfants-Rouges. Choosing from the myriad of little businesses, each one more appealing than the next, is almost impossible for first-timers. Once you pick out your choice of food, you can either take your meal to go or eat it right there at the market, on a sunny patio during the summer, or on a covered terrace during the winter.
