The City of Homs, Destroyed

The civil war in Syria began in 2011. The opposition forces were headquartered mostly in the city of Homs. This photo shows the extent of the damage: the city is almost entirely abandoned and is largely destroyed. The Syrian civil war has sadly rained death and destruction upon much of that country.

Skeletons of buildings stood standing where there once were thriving businesses and vibrant communities. In a flash, Homs had transformed into a ghost town. No matter one’s political or religious leanings, it is impossible not to feel compassion. A reminder that innocent people trying to lead upstanding lives always pay the highest price in war.

The Moment of Truth

Heartstopping. This action shot of an eagle just a split second before it catches a fish could scarcely be any better. Stunning and awe-inspiring. It’s no wonder eagles are symbols of power throughout the world. Look at the outstretched talons, the focused eyes, the soaring wings. The thrill of the hunt is palpable.

One can almost feel the rush, the sheer speed and power emanating from this majestic bird. And this isn’t even a video. What makes an outstanding photograph? How photographers portray emotional depth in an otherwise still image. Is there anything about this photo that isn’t a work of art?

The Circle of Life

A drone caught this image of a dead whale that washed up on a rocky beach. Nobody knows how or why the whale died, but we humans have a particular soft spot in our hearts for whales, and it’s always sad to see one go. But more often than not, whales washing up on shore is a sign that humans have mucked things up.

It’s a sign of our apathy and mindless consumption. We dump oil and plastic into their habitats. We treat earth’s resources as if they won’t run out. Dead whales washing ashore should ring alarm bells. What does it say about the world when sights like this are so common we’ve stopped reacting to it altogether?

Boats in a Row

Beauty is what everyone makes of it. But there’s something stunning about symmetry, especially when unintended. Lines, colors, shapes, and angles align beautifully in this drone image. Pretty boats are lined up in a row. Muddy waters on one side and brown cliffs on the other make the perfect backdrop.

It’s serene and still, as if the universe conspired to make this moment happen. And maybe it did. Not many people know that the drone captured this image at a gathering of the First Nations Trust in Canada. The boats serendipitously became a symbol of indigenous pride, unity, and purpose.

Scare...Clown

Think that’s a scarecrow? Wrong! It’s a scary clown. we have no idea if this was a staged scene, but what’s for sure is that it’s supremely weird. Okay, bye bye now, Sir Clown! Crows that dare venture into this field have a surprise waiting.

One can imagine the birds taking a quick detour, not so much out of fright but sheer confusion. We get it. We don’t know what to feel about this either. Best to steer clear. And while we’re at it, what exactly is the deal with scary clowns, anyway? Aren’t clowns supposed to be fun, funny, and adorable?

A Neat Playground

Are those shipping containers, trailers, or giant Legos? Who can tell because this is positively a work of art. We feel like we’ve entered a wonderland of sorts! Colorful containers are parked at similar angles, some straight and others a little awry. Concrete roads divide the containers neatly into rows.

Even the trolleys in the distance play their part – colorful and neatly placed where they belong. This setting is quiet, too quiet. Isn’t it ideal for a high-stakes hide-and-seek game? Or maybe adventures like that of Spiderman, jumping from one container to the next? A thrilling container top chase is in order. We can almost hear it calling out to us!

Awesome Wedding Photo

This freshly married couple got the wedding photo of a lifetime with an overhead shot from a drone. Just looking at it triggers our vertigo, but we can’t help but feel a little jealous anyway.

These ingenious folks made quite the innovative decision not only to get married on the roof of a skyscraper but also to have the wedding photo shot from even higher using a drone. It’s unique and refreshing as far as wedding photos go, setting the perfect tone for new beginnings. This couple is all heart and pure joy. When you use your imagination, the sky’s the limit!

Christ the Redeemer

This gut-wrenching shot of one of the world’s most famous landmarks was taken in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It shows Christ the Redeemer from an angle only birds have ever seen before. Not only is it one of the world’s tallest statues, but it rests on a mountain that itself looks over the city.

Look at the drops off that mountain, sharp and deep like human despair. If that isn’t the best visual representation of redemption, we don’t know what is. This is also a perfect example of using drones to show people previously unseen -- and unseeable -- perspectives and sights. Three cheers for technology, and for the creativity to know how to use it!

Drones Over Dubai

The creative idea of using two drones totally helps to give you the idea of what it takes to get these shots. Plus, you see what an ultra-modern city Dubai is, and what kind of insane architecture fills it these days. Skyscrapers? These ones literally pierce the clouds!

It’s amazing how quickly Dubai has gone from a sleepy backwater to one of the most modern bustling metropolises on the planet. Over the years, the country has become an architect’s playground – from sleek modern architecture to disruptive innovation, bordering on the outlandish. It seems like there’s nothing that human ingenuity and hard work can’t accomplish.

Diamond Mine

In the very middle of a town in South Africa sits this ugly gigantic diamond mine. You can see how the buildings stand right up to the edge of the dropoff. Insane. We wonder what it's like to live right next to such an enormous pit? This drone footage certainly gives us a new perspective on life.

Hopefully, human ingenuity will help ameliorate some of these problems. The diamond mine is also a reminder of how beauty and ugliness co-exist, often right next to each other. Such is the world we live in. Sometimes it needs taking a step back and a different perspective to see it.

The Silverdome

The Detroit Lions football team used to play at the now dilapidated Silverdome until the new Ford Field was completed in 2002. In the meantime, it has gone through multiple owners and even gutted of anything that could be sold for scrap. A drone took this photo after the collapse of the stadium’s domed roof.

The dilapidated Silverdome had become synonymous with Detroit city’s troubles. This once great stadium was set for demolition in 2017. By then, the place was completely abandoned, like a film setting for an eerie Zombie apocalypse. While some people clung to the nostalgia, others refused to shed tears for the building that they believed was an “embarrassment” and an eyesore.

El Nino Damage

In this frightening photo, you see the continuing undermining of a neighborhood due to the El Nino weather phenomenon. The residents understandably had to evacuate the area. It would come as no surprise if it all collapses into the sea any day now. Nature, you scary! Nothing like seeing the incredibly destructive power of nature to help put us little humans in our place.

On the other hand, we can see it as an opportunity to invent new ways of mitigating the damage. But opportunities mean little without meaningful intention and action. We mourn tragedy, only to resort to rampantly destructive ways when the dust settles. Photos such as this serve to jog collective amnesia.

The Aftermath in Mosul

It might be hard to tell, but what you’re seeing in this drone photo was at one time a historic mosque in the Iraqi city of Mosul. Built in the 12th century, it was the spiritual home for generations of Muslims until its 2017 destruction by ISIS. Not content with demolishing the mosque, they also destroyed much of the surrounding city.

Occupying much of historical Mesopotamia, Iraq rests upon the very cradle of civilization. But it is a troubled part of the world today, and as always it is the innocent that pay the price. Here’s hoping for better times.

Hong Kong from Above

How crazy is this? How did they fit so many huge buildings in this tiny space? It’s a little bit dizzying and overwhelming looking down on this drone scene. Hong Kong has been the poster child for ultra-modern cities for so long, it’s incredible how they never seem to fall behind.

And what a view we get in this photo from the drone! The city looks remarkably planned - every structure and building in its perfect place like the most satisfying puzzle. No odds and ends sticking out here, but a meticulous use of space that’s almost a meditative experience.

Flooded Theme Park

Can you believe it? When Hurricane Katrina laid waste to the whole region in 2005, this Louisiana theme park was completely flooded. Six Flags New Orleans never reopened, and in July of 2019, mayor LaToya Cantrell stated that they were considering demolishing the site altogether.

Thank goodness for drones. Just think of how much we’d be ignorant of if we didn’t have them to do our exploring for us! Even in the middle of the USA! Because would you just look at the theme park after the storm? The destruction is evident, yet there’s a strange new life to the park which now looks like an abandoned floating city.

The Arthur Kill Ship Graveyard

Did you know that right next to Staten Island there’s a ship graveyard hiding in plain sight? Ships that had been damaged would be kept there during the Second World War until they could be sold for scrap. But they never got to them all before abandoning the project. It’s so eerie that almost nobody ever visits.

Basically, in the middle of one of the world’s major cities, one of the most important tourist destinations on the planet, you can find such weird abandoned areas. Why travel to abandoned shipwreck sites in the ocean when maritime history is just a subway and ferry ride away? Who would believe it? Great photo, though.

Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey marked the first time since 2005 that a category three or higher storm hit the USA. This compelling drone image documents just a fraction of the damage that it wrought. 37 Americans lost their lives in the storm, in addition to as much as 10 billion dollars in damage.

If this is the calm after the storm, picture what the storm must’ve been like! Can you imagine being the owner of one of these houses? Putting years of love and hard work into building a home, only to have everything destroyed. Even assuming that the damage was covered by insurance, it is heartbreaking to see this.

The Mystical Ruins of Talin Cathedral

What’s better than a picture of an ancient cathedral? A picture of that cathedral from the skies. This drone image views churches in a new light and perspective. The Talin Cathedral in the Aragatsotn province of Armenia was built in the 7th century.

Today, the cathedral is mostly in ruins due to devastating earthquakes in 1840 and 1931. But even its ruins are magical still, especially when viewed from above. Other cathedrals might have spires or steeples. The top of this one looks like a giant chimney or a dome Tom Cruise might rappel into during one of his famously impossible missions.

Hurricane Maria

Few natural disasters can rival a hurricane for sheer destructive power. Just look at what happened to Puerto Rico and Dominica when Hurricane Maria arrived. This photo is but a sample of the devastation the residents suffered. The pavement was literally torn up. Entire trees were uprooted.

How fortunate that we are able to send drones in to make a first assessment of disaster areas even before it’s safe for people to be there. Not just a camera for landscape photographers or adventurers, drones help with relief planning and resource allocation. Cameras that go where nobody can or should go.

Petting Zoo

Sometimes a tour group gets lucky. These folks were visiting Mexico and taking a boat ride when a gray whale swam right up to them to say hi. It’s not every day you go out on your boat and bump into a friendly whale. Speaking for ourselves, we’d be too scared to pet it.

All it takes is one swish of a whale tail to topple this boat over. The awe-inspiring majesty of a giant whale is without a doubt one of the most unforgettable sights a person might experience in their lifetime. But to see one so up close is a whole other level.

Of Beauty and Terror

Here we have the aftermath of a terrible boat accident at sea in the coastal state of Goa, India. This drone image captures the intensity of the moment but somehow manages to make it serene and beautiful. The waves crash gently, even as people and lifeguards scramble to get the damaged boat on shore.

The boat is mangled beyond repair. But life goes on regardless – almost as if nothing happened. It is the ocean’s prerogative to remind us of beauty and death, of our fleeting existence. Here one day, gone the next. And the world will continue to spin madly on.

Fearless Rock Climber

A famous singer once sang about “The Climb” – how it’s not about how fast one climbs or what’s on the other side, it’s about the journey. Looking up at this rock, we’d say those lyrics are ambitious at best, because we're feeling queasy just from looking at this photo.

Look at this climber. Now there is a real daredevil! We're almost glad that we don’t even know the height of this insane climb. We don’t know if this person is a man or a woman, but they’re braver than we are! Can you believe people do this voluntarily? Are near-death experiences and nausea fun for you?

Freeway Accident

This horrifying drone picture shows a ghastly collision on the I-5 in Los Angeles. It seems like a semi-trailer crossed the median strip and careened uncontrollably into oncoming traffic. Imagine driving down the highway without a care, only to have a gigantic trailer headed straight for you!

Just the thought alone is horrific and sends chills down our spines. Tragically, one person was killed, but it could have been so much worse. We don’t know what drone was used to take this photo, but the hyper-realistic resolution and color make it seem almost more real than real. It almost looks like a still from a movie - death and destruction in technicolor, the ensuing chaos after the storm.

Having a Whale of a Time

Crazy scary. A humpback whale jumps out of the water and almost lands on top of a small pleasure boat. Just a few feet to the right, and all that would have been left of the boat would be splinters. Most people would be lucky just to spot a whale in their lifetimes.

This one decided to make a grand entrance! Talk about lucky, heart-stopping sightings! This happened just off the coast at Santa Barbara, California. Many whale species migrate along the Pacific coast of North America every year between Alaska and Hawaii. The boat is literally just a fraction of the whale’s size, just imagine the excitement, not to mention the bragging rights!

The Statue of Liberty from Above

Drone photography doesn’t get any better than this! The Statue of Liberty is the symbol of the greatness of America, as well as an awe-inspiring artistic masterpiece. But who among us has ever seen this stunning view of it before? Lady Liberty is a woman on a mission.

Eyes fixed and feet on the ground, she holds the flame of liberty high. Plus, would you look at her stance? She’s not messing around. A new angle or a new perspective can turn the mundane into the exotic, and the exotic into the breathtaking. That is exactly what this drone photo has accomplished. We want more!

San Andreas' Fault

This is probably the most famous crack in the Earth’s crust. It divides the state of California into two parts on two separate continental plates: the North American and the Pacific tectonic plates. This is why there are so many earthquakes in California. The fault stretches between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The Earth has dozens of fault lines, but the San Andreas is the most famous one for a few reasons. One is, that few are as strikingly clear as this one. In fact, most are at the bottom of the ocean. Also, most don't run right through the middle of major populated centers as this one does.

A Living Breathing Hotel

When you’re looking for a breath of fresh air (quite literally) in downtown Singapore, the Oasia hotel is ‘the’ place to be. Among other things, this hotel is famous for lush greenery surrounding its exteriors. It’s the oasis every concrete jungle needs! This aerial view brilliantly captures the contrast in surroundings.

We have a pop of bright green, brick, and blue in between imposing concrete. Safe to say that everything else blends into the background. Singapore is a famously vibrant city, and sites like Oasia are undoubtedly at its heart. The hotel exemplifies how human ingenuity and the natural world can and should meet. They don’t have to be at odds.

A Retreat In The Desert

It would take a lifetime to cover all the jaw-dropping places one can stay at on this planet! Thanks to drones, we can eliminate expensive travel for now and be content with living vicariously. This picture is of a remote retreat in the United Arab Emirates, only accessible by trekking across the desert.

So, you want an offbeat retreat? You’ll have to work for it, of course! This oasis is well worth the effort. It has everything you need and more – trees, water, and a swimming pool too. The aerial drone view really puts into perspective what “oasis in the desert” means. Imagine getting lost in the endless expanse of sand and not knowing where to go.

Road Collapse

If there’s one thing in nature that scares the beejezus out of us, water has got to be it. Calm and serene one minute. Furious, lashing, and roaring the next! Water has got to be the most intense primal force in nature. What you’re seeing is the aftermath of a river flooding after a rainstorm and simply washing away a section of the roadway.

Yes, there was once a road where a gaping hole and giant puddles now lie. If concrete can give way to water’s fury so easily, what chance do mere mortals have? Thankfully, we hear there were no people on that section of road just then.

Swimming With Sharks

We give up. we will never understand some people. You are SWIMMING. With SHARKS. Here’s a revolutionary idea: how about you not do that maybe? Perhaps we're just made of different stuff, but we would much prefer looking at sharks from a safe distance.

Swimming with them seems highly unnecessary, don’t you think? What are the chances of getting bitten? We know, we know. Probably slim. But you wanna know the best answer? The chances of getting bitten are about a gazillion times less if you DON’T SWIM WITH SHARKS. We don’t want to be those people, but we wonder what the next few photos in this series showed.

Giant Bird's Nest

Seems like this is a giant nest of little birds* that they build atop a utility pole. We understand that such little birds building such enormous nests is somewhat unusual, so we consider ourselves lucky for having gotten to see this photo. But admit it: looks kinda sinister at first until you know what it is, right?

It’s not something you want to see on a casual stroll through the woods, that’s for sure. We was about to call it a giant birds’ nest, but we realized that could be misunderstood to mean that they were giant birds. So we fixed it! Clarity is your friend.

Ocean Life

There’s always something new and surprising to see in nature, especially when you have drones flying all over the place to find the best shots. Case in point: a shark being surrounded by a school of little fish. It’s usually the other way around – schools of fish swirling in a giant ball with predators circling nearby.

This view is stunning. Now that we’ve enjoyed the beautiful sight of this unforgettable photo, here’s a fun fact. Sometimes schools of fish will follow a shark around so that other predators thinking of eating them will steer clear. Most other fish keep their distance when a shark’s around. Fascinating, isn’t it?

Caught Cheating

Some guy followed his wife with his drone to catch her going to a parking lot to cheat on him. As she got in her lover’s car, she probably thought she was clever, but she was no match for a jilted husband who was also a skilled drone pilot.

We’ve heard of people hacking into their spouse’s phones and computers, but this is a new level of hi-tech spying. It’s sad he resorted to it, but it was effective. Marriage is tough. It’s a harsh world out there, and this is a classic example of using a drone for premeditated espionage. We mean, maybe she had it coming, but you’ve got to admit that this raises serious ethical and privacy issues.

Swim for Your Life!

Sharks again. It’s heart attack time! Sheesh. We gotta admit, drone footage of sharks in close proximity to humans is pretty darn compelling. Kinda grabs you by the throat, so to speak. But it’s nightmare-inducing stuff every single time.

Does that unfortunate woman not realize that there is a giant great white shark just a few feet away from her? Say what you will but swimming in the ocean is never a good idea. We hope she got away safe. She looks like a strong swimmer. We wonder if the pilot managed to warn her in some way. If only this drone also came with some kind of an audible warning system!

On the Hunt

This astonishing shot of a large bird of prey on the hunt was not the half-hearted work of an amateur. You need skill, patience, and practice (and yes, luck) if you want to capture images such as this. It wouldn’t come as a shock if the bird decided that the unwelcome drone was, in fact, its prey.

Who can't help but be inspired by great birds of prey flaunting their might and skill? Look at the bird's steely focus and determination. It’s awe-inspiring! No wonder eagles, hawks, and falcons are symbols of power and virtue throughout the world. Plus, they’re incredibly beautiful.

Family Photos Done Differently

We’d like to be a wildflower or a quiet observant harvest mouse at this photoshoot! Because why settle for boring family photos when we live in the age of drones? This family takes it up a notch with a vertical drone shot that makes our hearts leap. It’s the ultimate road trip picture.

Rice fields on the left, a pond on the right, and a family thoroughly enjoying themselves splayed out in the middle. One word? Fun! What a difference perspective makes to a photograph and an otherwise regular day out with family. What’s more, the shot might be vertical but captures the surroundings perfectly.

Catching Some Rays

Isn’t tilting at windmills paradigmatic of insanity? Does chilling atop a wind turbine 200 feet in the air count? Sure, maybe he’s a professional doing some sort of maintenance or repair, but still. So, you think you’re calm? Try standing on a wind turbine suspended high in the air calm!

Beautiful Whale Spouting

In the annals of whale photography, this shot is one for the ages. Captured right at the moment of spouting, as sunlight passes through the mist ejected from the whale. It’s one of those moments that makes you grateful for technology. Can you imagine trying to capture a shot like this without a drone?

How would you even do it? Fly around the ocean in a chopper? Dangle precariously from the sides and hope a whale shows up for the perfect shot? Inconceivable, right? Drone photography has really changed the game over the years, and the world is better off for it!

Follow the Leader

Wow. This photo is definitely a highlight. An enormous whale is calmly following a little boat. It's true that people generally have little to fear from whales, but being so close to a creature so gigantic is inherently dangerous and unpredictable. Even a little accident could lead to a major tragedy.

If it were me in that boat, we have no doubt that our feelings would be split between excitement and thrill on one hand, and abject fear and panic on the other. But if we survived, it would certainly remain in our memory as one of the greatest experiences of our lives.

Bird Hello

Epic action shot! The crow literally flew right up to a drone in flight to say hello! Look at the expression on its face! Wanna bet the drone pilot was a bit freaked out by the unexpected visit? This crow does not look pleased one bit. And from what one hears about crows; we don’t recommend annoying one either.

There’s probably a valid reason why a group of crows is called a “murder.” But what’s done is done and let’s hope for the best. The fun side of drone photography often involves surprising and candid wildlife shots. There’s not a human being alive who isn’t naturally drawn to such whimsical beauty.

When Dogs Attack

Speaking of unexpected candid wildlife shots, here’s one for the ages! It’s not every day you see a different side to dogs. But this one reminds us that as cute and cuddly as they might be, dogs are animals at the end of the day. What’s the story behind th is image?

The operator was piloting his drone along the river when he overflew a dog playing in the water. The dog noticed the drone, and all of a sudden attacked it! That is one scary dog! We wonder if the drone survived the encounter. Judging by the picture, it must have been a real close call. We can only imagine what those jaws and teeth would do to a flimsy little flying toy.

Traffic in China

You know the world’s gone bonkers when most of our horror stories involve traffic. And China always takes things to the ultimate level because would you look at this horror story? Can you imagine inching your way through traffic like this? Someone needs to invent jet packs already.

It’s the 21st century and we’re no closer to living like the Jetsons now than we were decades ago, when the cartoon came out! Flying over this scene with a drone must have given the operator quite a feeling of freedom though! Just try counting the lanes on this mega-highway, that will pass some time.

Relaxing in the Shallow End

Looks like someone is having fun relaxing in the shallow tropical beach water. A rule older than drones, older even than photography, is that eye candy sells! Ever seen a Greek statue? Yup. Human nature never changes. We hope she doesn’t mind being spied on by the drone operator.

Privacy is definitely one of the big concerns in the exciting new world of drones. Drones are excellent. Their owners? Not always. We hear too many stories of drone misuse. But if you spy one and have good aim, nosy drones, and their operators are fair game! Don’t forget to gather your friends and family for all the destructive fun!

Drone Captures Robotic Shark

Why is there even such a thing as a robotic shark? Scientific research; a prank; some sort of recreation or sporting equipment? Those are the possibilities that we can think of. Are we missing anything? As if the sea and real sharks weren’t terrifying enough, someone decided to add a robotic shark into the mix.

This image was captured by a drone pilot off the Atlantic coast of Florida. For some reason, the robotic shark was being pulled behind a boat. Unsuspecting swimmers and surfers, who might have spotted this? Good news: you’ve got nothing to worry about for today. Small mercies but hey, we’ll take it.

A Family of Killer Whales

Some drones are equipped for scientific exploration and timeless art. One such captured this perfect overhead shot of a family of killer whales roaming the open ocean. It’s an outstanding image, a real keeper. Imagine the patience it must take to send your drone over miles and miles of ocean.

You’re looking at your screen and seeing nothing but water and more water until finally...you get the shot of a lifetime! We dock our hats in respect. You’ve got to be committed and frankly a little obsessive to create outstanding art. The results, like this beauty, are well worth it!

Swimming with the Fishes

Swimming with the fishes...or a whale...or a whale shark. You know, like, whatever. Let’s just call it swimming with sea life and leave it at that. Kind of a freaky photo. We know it’s probably totally safe, but you won’t find me swimming with a creature like that. They look docile and friendly enough.

But if there’s one thing the ocean teaches us, it’s the element of surprise. You never know what you’re going to get. But you go ahead. You do you! We admit it would be almost worth getting into the water with this giant fish just to be able to show off this amazing photo forever. Will we actually do it? Absolutely not.

Flying Stingray

Outstanding action shot! Is this a ray from one of the Earth's oceans, or is it a science fiction spaceship? You decide! The camera caught the very moment the Mobula devil ray breached (flew out of the water). It’s an exceptionally lucky shot.

Space exploration might be incredible but the depths of the ocean contain secrets just as wondrous we’re certain. Scientists have explored and mapped only 5 percent of the ocean. That’s a whopping 95 percent of “who knows what lies beneath.” The ocean is endlessly fascinating and terrifying. For now, we're content with seeing what it wants me to see!

Fishermen at Work

This drone photo is a genuine work of art. You’re looking at a group of fishermen casting their net (the huge blue objects) into the sea from their fishing boat. The pops of bright blue against brown are a sight for sore eyes. We're not sure what they’re going to catch in such shallow water.

You see some of the men are in the boat, while others are literally wading on the sandy bottom. But you never know. If there’s one thing we know about water, it’s always full of pleasant and sometimes nasty surprises. That prized catch of the day doesn’t seem likely, so we’re happy with a drone shot of the day instead.

Where Planes Go to Be Salvaged

It’s a graveyard...for airplanes! Thousands upon thousands of airplanes from the US military have been brought here when they were no longer needed for active service. Unfortunately it’s mostly off-limits to visitors, but if we’re not mistaken, you'll be dreaming about it tonight!

Known as the world’s largest airplane boneyard, it serves a number of functions. Some planes are stored in case they’re ever needed again. Others are sent there for repair. And others are disassembled for scrap and spare parts. A place where planes go to die or find new life. It’s a stunning visual display – of military might and stories of bravery that will turn into physical dust but live on in collective memory.

A Picture-Perfect Fish Farm at Faroe Islands, Denmark

Do we see fish farms or ethereal crop circles in the water? The world is your oyster when water meets the sky, and the two elements meet drone photography! We love how human endeavor and nature come together seamlessly in this drone shot near Sandavagur village in Denmark.

Although manmade, the fish farms stand harmoniously in the waters. And is it just me or are they starting to resemble Buddhist mandalas – symbols of an ideal universe and the ebb and flow that is life? It’s almost a reminder that the key to existence is in striking a balance. We take from nature relentlessly without a thought of giving back.

Dead Whale

Apparently, these two guys were just innocently out boating one day when they came across a recently deceased carcass of a whale floating on the water. So, they stopped and checked it out. It’s a little sad they didn’t get here earlier, but such is the cycle of life.

We don’t know what was the whale’s cause of death. It could have been a predator such as a killer whale or shark, old age, disease, or it might have been caused by humans in some way. We hope not but at this point, it wouldn’t be surprising if another magnificent creature died because of human folly, inadvertent or otherwise.

Lightning Storm

Wild nature! When a drone operator was expecting a nice nighttime cityscape but he ended up with something much more exciting! Have you ever seen so much lightning bursting out of a single thundercloud – its tentacles reaching across the sky and ground? We wonder if the drone’s circuitry got fried.

The awesome power of nature is not a force to be trifled with. We just can’t get enough of pictures like this. When they are beautifully photographed, they are able to touch a very deep part of me. We guess you could call it inspiring and deeply humbling. It makes me feel small yet also a part of something larger.

From Fantasy to Urban Facades

That Hong Kong has amazing architecture is a truth well-known. But this aerial photography captured from the ground up reveals mysteries even writers like JRR Tolkien might not have anticipated. Densely packed, towering skyscrapers stretch toward the heavens from a circular pattern that closely resembles the Eye of Sauron.

The Dark Lord is alive and well, albeit in a more futuristic avatar! His dominion looks different but also the same. Sure, there are no fiery pits, orcs, or trolls in this world. But we have substitutes - men in suits, global warming, and the glitzy lights of capitalism. And of course, there’s still the relentless pursuit of power AKA the one ring that binds them all.

The Double Date

Perfect timing and composition again as the overhead drone catches a priceless moment in time. A pair of lovely women stretch out on the beach waiting for the waves to wash over them. Few things compare to the feel of sand and water on skin.

Plus, check out the blending colors and the symmetry in the composition. The women blend in with the sand oh so effortlessly, as if this is where they were always meant to be. They’re daughters of the ocean, and they know it! We think we have a winner because this is what photography is all about.

Hammerhead Up Close

Hammerheads are truly frightening creatures to look at. They are clearly creatures of another dimension, too fantastical for the likes of us to comprehend. And yet they co-exist or try to with mere mortals. We're not sure we would even want our drone to get this close to one, so props to the obviously skilled operator for managing it.

But in real life? The shark wouldn’t need to kill us; we’d drop dead of fright on the spot! We’ve always considered hammerheads the scary clowns of the sea. They look so ridiculous, you can imagine them getting teased in fish school (fish school! Get it??) except they’re, you know, GIANT KILLER SHARKS!

Bird's Nest Bird's Eye View

Here’s another perfect example of a beautiful photo that only a drone could have given us. The overhead view of an already high-up bird’s nest gives us a perspective that previous generations could not have imagined. It’s not every day we get to see a nest from above and not on the side.

Check out the exquisite detail in this picture! Really brings out the coziness of a nest. And since we’re here talking about birds, help me out a little here. We’ve always wondered: if storks bring babies to people, who brings storks their babies? Other storks? Maybe carrier pigeons? We obviously need to brush up on our ornithology and creative thinking too!

Mountain Halo

The only thing more awe-inspiring than the quality of this photo is the natural phenomenon it depicts. We know of regular halos or even halos around the sun. But a mountain halo is as rare as it gets. The halo surrounding this mountain is like something out of an oil painting.

Sending a drone out into the wilderness to find these sights must have been quite a project! Distant landscapes are often inaccessible, and when you can get to them, the angles and perspectives are often quite limited. Modern use of drones helps to solve both problems to stunning effect.

Rediscovering a City

Coastlines and Dreamscapes

In the eyes of a drone, the stunning Algarve coastline looks like a portal to another world. From above, the sands and cliffs blend into an intricate mosaic that could well be the brushstrokes of a cosmic artist. It is as if the earth herself has dipped her fingertips in paint. The results?

A photograph that’s familiar and also fantastical. The beach takes on the hues of another planet almost, a ruddy shade reminiscent of Mars. All it takes is drone photography to change a day at the beach into a dreamscape. The Algarve coastline, as captured through the lens of a drone, transforms into a world that's both real and surreal.

On Top of the World

This awesome photo captures the moment when a mountain climber finally succeeded in scaling the summit. It’s absolutely magnificent and, if you suffer from vertigo, horrifying as well. But thank you to the brave climber for capturing the shot so we at home can enjoy the view vicariously.

One of the really cool touches in this photo is that it uses two drones. One drone helps us see the main subject of the picture while the other gives us peeks into how the shot was made. Perspective on perspective, views that give us different views. This one is all kinds of meta.

Get Out of the Water

Here we go again with the sharks! We get that they’re fascinating creatures, but must one really admire them up close? And then proceed to share pictures with the world? It seems that people want us to never be able to fall asleep. Or to never get in the water again.

Whatever it is, it’s working. If you want me scared, you’ll be happy to know we're utterly terrified. But at least it’s not a crocodile. Because crocs seem more determined to bite now that we think about it. Who’s with us? We wonder who would win a battle royale between a shark and a croc. Send out the drones!

Forest in the Winter

Here we have a stunning overhead shot of a winter forest scene. Vibrant green snowless trees stand next to snow-covered grassland. There’s a starkness to this forest that’s rather unusual, don't you think? The icy landscape alongside gives the forest a haunting quality – a sign that winter is slowly but surely approaching and waiting to take over.

Call that unsettling or calm, it’s all subjective. But this is about as good as landscape photography gets. A unique perspective that has eluded us for years until drones came around and captured it. The results are stunning. And the comment it makes about the synergy between technology and art is exciting.

Oceanside Spaceship

Is there anyone out there so jaded that they fail to get inspired by space exploration? We hope not. Sadly, the space shuttle program is now a thing of the past, but hopefully something bigger and better will be created to replace it. Fun fact: did you know that NASA moves space shuttles on rafts on the water?

We sure didn’t. Seems kind of risky and dangerous to me, since that is one expensive piece of equipment. But we have it on good authority that they know what they’re doing. Still, how much do you suppose it costs to ensure the passage against falling into the sea?

Floating

Somebody built a wall to separate a bit of the ocean into a calm swimming pool. The results are both beautiful and electrifying. Tiny waves and ripples make their way inside the pool. If you’ve ever wanted to try open water swimming but held yourself back in fear, this is a good way to dip your toes in it.

What we love the most is the contrast between the stormy sea and the woman calmly floating on her back. What a wonderful touch. The photographer even went a couple of steps further with the awesome drone perspective and the perfectly planned framing.

Bird of Prey

You’re innocently flying your drone, taking lovely pictures of the countryside and before you know it...BAM! A hawk swoops in and attacks! Not fair, nature! We mean, we love birds of prey and all, but leave our precious drone alone! The good news?

It didn’t happen to me, but we still understand the sheer panic of trying to keep your drone safe. For now, we get to sit back and enjoy the entertainment value of a bird defending its turf from a flying toy robot. Who won this round? We're quite sure it was the hawk. But at least we know the drone stayed intact and we got an amazing photograph out of it!

Whale Spouting Water in Action

This is an outstanding shot of a whale spinning in the water while blowing bubbles to the surface. The drone captured it perfectly for our viewing pleasure. It seems that the whale is performing a maneuver known as a bubble net.

When it spots a school of prey, it surrounds them with bubbles, then lunges up the middle to devour them all! Who knew bubbles – those light balls of air and water - would take on new meaning in the ocean? Turns out that a whale swishing around in circles surrounded by bubbles isn’t putting on a delightful show, it means dinner is served!

Active Volcano

Lava has got to be one of the scariest of natural phenomena. Spewing, hot, and forceful, lava is the closest we will ever get to sensing the earth’s heart. She’s alive and well, and let nobody forget that! What makes a photo a guaranteed winner?

One that shows a natural landscape along with some sort of example of the awesome power of nature – especially at such close quarters. And this picture certainly has it all. Well done to the drone pilot. One of the hottest things in nature, it’s hard not to imagine what lava would do to us if we ever got too close. Not that there’s much chance of that, of course. We're keeping our distance.

Low Flying Airplane

Ok, something seems a bit off here. Is this jet plane flying way too low, or is the parking lot way too close to the runway? While perfect for plane spotters looking for a thrill, it’s dangerous in every other way.

Each landing has got to be a close shave for both the cars and the plane. Whatever it is, this does not seem like a safe situation to me and smacks of poor planning. Did you notice the airplane’s shadow on the parking lot? It’s the same size as the plane! That’s how you can tell how low it’s flying.

The Tubbs Fire, Santa Rosa, CA

What a tragedy. When The Tubbs Fire started on Tubbs Lane in Santa Rosa, California in 2017, it quickly burned out of control. The result was more than 5000 buildings destroyed. This drone photo documents several city blocks having been wiped away by the fire. Sadly, 22 people lost their lives in the fire.

It also caused over a billion dollars in damage. On a positive note, thanks to modern technology including drones, it’s possible to enter extremely dangerous areas much more quickly than before in order to plan and implement assistance efforts. If only technology could help prevent fires just as easily.

Sinkhole

What a crazy thing to happen right in the middle of a neighborhood. Freaky. We can’t help imagining: what if it was our house that got sucked into the bowels of the earth all of a sudden? How does this happen? Incompetent construction?

Earthquake? Flash flood? Maybe it’s a combination of factors. Either way, it’s horrifying. One minute you’re at home enjoying dinner in front of the TV, and the next moment, your house is a pile of rubble deep in the earth! It is as if the devil himself is dragging everything you own into the depths of hell.

Orcas Feasting on Great Whale

Remember when we watched “Free Willy” in the early ‘90s and all everyone wanted was a pet orca? Bad idea! Willy in the film might’ve been adorable, but how did everyone forget he’s a killer whale? Only one the deadliest predators of the sea?!

This drone image is just a tiny example of how powerful and vicious they can be. It captures the moment when a pod of orcas decided to hunt, kill, and eat a giant whale. That’s right, a giant whale! Far from a pleasant sight, but a valuable document of nature’s fury, and the circle of life.

Dolphin in Trouble

What we’re seeing here is apparently a seal desperately trying to escape a shark attack. It’s obviously already seriously injured, so we don’t know whether to feel optimistic that it might've got away. A sad end for a noble creature, but that is the circle of life.

The most effective drone photos are the ones that touch our emotions in some way. And it doesn’t always have to be positive. Life isn’t always about the happy moments after all. It’s alright and sometimes even warranted that art pulls at our heartstrings and elicits tears from time to time. Isn't that the point of it, to make us feel?

A Landing Accident

In this picture, we see the aftermath of a catastrophic accident on a runway. Clearly, something went seriously wrong during the landing, and the plane slid down the embankment. We sure hope nobody was seriously hurt. You know what they say - the chances of a flight crashing are the highest just before takeoff or landing.

How absolutely terrifying! Since the weather seems quite clear, we're going out on a limb and saying that there was a problem with the landing gear. Does anyone know if a plane can be brought back into service after an accident like this?

Talk About a Nightmare

Suspend a line of hammocks high above a canyon and rent them out to sleepy daredevils? Sure, why not? Not for me, though. You couldn’t pay me enough in this lifetime or the next! Apparently, this is like a waystation and all these people are on their way higher and higher.

One question: why? Two: how is this fun for anyone? We guess adrenaline junkies are a real thing. Crazy thrill seekers who can’t function unless they’re on the edge both literally and metaphorically. Well, more power to them. They are an endless source of inspiration and entertainment, even if we have no desire personally to emulate them.

A Family of Whales

We can’t imagine there have been many times that a shot like this has been captured. A large group of giant whales have gathered all together and are all surfacing at the same time in very tight formation. You can bet that under the surface they are bumping and jostling.

We don't know if this happens a lot, but it’s sure the first time we’ve seen it. If we had to guess, we’d say that this is some sort of feeding strategy. The whales probably corralled a huge school of prey into a tight area and then converges to gobble them all up. Any other theories?

Swimming with the Sharks

Nope. Next. This is not the job or hobby for us. As much as we love operating drones, give us people, places, and things to click on dry land, any day. Presumably, at least these are not particularly vicious sharks. At least, not to humans. But still. You can call us cowards.

It’s ok, we're not afraid of that tag. Still, we're glad someone is brave enough to swim in the middle of a school of giant carnivorous sharks. Otherwise, we would be robbed of this amazing photo. So, thank you Mr. Scuba Man, and thank you, Mr. Drone Operator!

Swimming with the Whale Sharks

This high overhead shot shows people out for a swim alongside several gigantic whale sharks. These swimmers are pretty adventurous, getting in the water together with gigantic mammals. Good for them. For what it’s worth, even though whale sharks are sharks, and indeed the biggest fish in the world, they are gentle plankton eaters.

So, it’s not like swimming with great whites. More like swimming with gentle giants. But they’re massive and intimidating nonetheless. The story of Jonah and the whale comes to mind, and although the chances of that happening are slim, who’s to say what can happen? Best to keep a safe distance.

Snowy Pileup

This frightening drone photo documents a mind-blowing 100 vehicle pileup caused by slippery snowy road conditions in Illinois. The tragedy began with the semi-trailers, but it for sure didn’t end with them. Just look at them all. Imagine the horror as one car barrels into another at breakneck speed.

You see it coming only seconds before, and by then, it’s too late. What a horrifying way to go. We owe a debt of gratitude to all the first responders who must’ve worked through the night in freezing and dangerous conditions to get hundreds of people to safety. We salute your selfless dedication and bravery.

The Kraken Hole

This image was captured by a drone as it flew over Lake Berryessa, a man-made reservoir created by the Monticello Dam in Napa Valley, California. During the abundant spring rains, the lake is in danger of overflowing and flooding, so they open up this magical-looking spillway that safely releases the extra water to the valley below.

The giant vortex looks as though it will kill us all by releasing the mythical Kraken any second, but it’s really all just science and engineering. So no need to panic. It’s like the perfect marriage of art and engineering. And nothing better than a drone to give you the clearest possible perspective. Makes me be happy to be human!

A Farmyard Dance

Cattle corralling is an art form. Yes, we said it. This is no mundane activity. Precision is the name of the game, where every step can be the difference between going home and barreling into another bovine. Not everyone’s cut out for life on the farm; herding and handling livestock especially!

The way cattle come together is a living, breathing masterpiece. You’ve got to have intuition, rhythm, and a strong intuition - almost a farmyard version of moving geometry and symmetry. The aerial drone shot captures a dance of brown shapes and shadows. The dance is functional, so the cows can go home. It’s also theater, for anyone who likes visual spectacles in unexpected places.

Soaring Above the Amazon Rainforest

What can one say about the incredible Amazon rainforest that hasn’t been mentioned yet? So, when words fail me the way they sometimes do, turn to photography instead. We’re all accustomed to seeing videos and images from inside the Amazon Forest, of life unfolding in the heart of the green. But the view from above is just as magnificent, don’t you think?

Densely packed trees give way for nothing, except sunlight to stream in and aerial residents. What lies underneath is magic as all of us know. As one of the world’s largest carbon sinks, the Amazon rainforest is indispensable to existence. To think we were almost at the brink of losing this natural treasure to wildfires.

Love And Light on an Island

If languid and serene were a picture, this would be it. This drone image makes me want to move to a sleepy seaside town immediately and the town here seems perfect. Alter do Chão in Brazil is a quiet town popular with visitors during weekends and holidays.

One can see why! Its star attraction is “Ilha do Amor” or the Island of Love – an island with stunning white sand located right in front of the town. The lighting in this drone image is almost ethereal, illuminating the white sand and everything on it. Even the ocean surrounding the island fades into the background.

Ships Coming Home

When you think of stunning sunset pictures, oil tankers landing in port are probably not the subject you have in mind. But that’s the thing about drone photography. Take an aerial view and the perspective dramatically shifts. They don’t call it a bird’s eye view for nothing.

Oil tankers – otherwise big, clunky, and ugly in our eyes - float serenely and beautifully in the waters. You can somehow tell they’ve had a busy day. It’s time to rest. As the sun casts its last light and disappears into the horizon, it seems to be calling the tankers home – much like birds flying to their nests at dusk.

Winterscapes in Norway

The Land of The Midnight Sun never disappoints. How can it with a moniker like that? Whether you’re chasing the Northern Lights or exploring fjords, Norway is a drone photographer’s paradise. This image captures the country’s stunning Lofoten Islands in winter. Snow-capped mountains, ice, and the sky form a picturesque backdrop.

You might not see it at first but in the distance lies the quaint fishing village of Reine, known to most people on this side of the hemisphere as “the most beautiful place in the world.” What makes this image stunning is how it captures the hush of winter. Life brims beneath the surface still, even though there’s nothing visibly going on.

Maternal Giants of the Deep

Sighting a humpback whale is probably on most people’s bucket list. Spotting one with a young calf swimming on its back? That would make anyone’s life feel redeemed – as if one could die tomorrow peacefully with no regrets. If a photograph can evoke such emotion, imagine witnessing this in real life.

The bond between mother whales and their calves is legendary, and humpback whales especially so! Calves swim closely alongside their mothers, especially in the early stages of their life. It’s a way to feed on delicious, nutritious fat from mom while staying safe from predators such as killer whales. Mother and calf stay together for about a year until the calf is weaned.

Smoke and Mirrors

Is this a drone shot of glaciers or an abstract painting? We're stumped, and in the best way. The way the photo is composed makes it seem like glaciers dance in veils of vapor and smoke. As if they’re taking a deep breath, exhaling centuries of memory into the open sky.

Stunning and also a bit heartbreaking given how fragile our glaciers are. These magnificent icy sentinels are disappearing rapidly each year, and with it, a vital part of the earth’s story. Pretty soon, all we might be left with are memories, wispy and fleeting the way this glacier already appears in this image.

Gazing Into the Heart of the Earth

We're glad for this aerial view because can you imagine walking through forests and not knowing there’s a giant gaping hole ahead? This here is what they call a doline – a kind of funnel-shaped depression in the ground. But geographical terms just don’t cut it for this chasm that seems to go into the depths of the earth.

The doline is reportedly 666 meters deep and located at Xiaozhai village in Chongqing, China. This breathtaking chasm is one of the world’s largest sinkholes. We have so many questions. What lies beneath? Where does it go? Somehow we're torn between wanting to rappel down and wanting to continue being alive.

Perspective Is Everything

A drone shot of a boat-shaped bridge with a boat sailing past underneath? That’s quite meta! What we especially love is how the picture draws you in bit by bit, unveiling things as you go. At first glance, it seemed as if we were looking at a boat to begin with; a big yellow boat cruising calmly through the waters.

Such is the clever play on perspective. But a second glance reveals cars. Is this boat a ferry? Seems rather fancy for a ferry. Peer into the photo even more and that’s when you see a small boat zipping past. Layer upon layer of revelations. All in all, what a stunning shot! The view really is better from above.

Mingling With the Crowd From Above

Most of us wouldn’t be caught dead in a crowd, especially after the nightmare that was the pandemic. But looking at one through the eyes of a drone? We could totally get on board with that. You get all the perspective and none of the pushing, shoving, straining, or breathing in rank body odor!

If you’re the kind who thrives on a crowd’s energy, this might not work. For the rest of us, this drone image makes crowded spaces both bearable and beautiful. You can sense the common purpose, the subtle order in chaos. The best part? You don’t even have to be there.

Party on the Interstate

Ask any drone photographer about long exposure and they’ll tell you it boils down to the right equipment, location, and painstakingly setting up once the sun goes down. Oh, and the most important element - a LOT of waiting around! But the results, as we can see here, are worth everything.

Who knew that traffic – the bane of our everyday lives – could look so beautiful? Only drones can make the mundane and infuriating seem like technicolor art in motion. It takes skill though, and a truckload of passion and patience. Artists truly go the extra mile for that one breakthrough moment.

View of a Pier From Above

This drone gives new meaning to walking on a pier! How often do we think about what it means to hang out at a pier, except that it’s a whole lot of fun? But zoom out from the scene a little, and how the perspective dramatically changes. We’re essentially on a bridge above the sea – sometimes calm, other times raging.

Big ups to the composition on this photograph. The grainy texture gives life to every element – the crashing waves, their color, the pier soaked in sea water, and the tiny speck of a human walking across. What an aerial view can do! It’s inspiring and humbling all at once.

Sentinels of the Desert

Somewhere in the desert, where the sun and sand unite as if they were one, a caravan of camels travels across the golden dunes. From high above, they appear as delicate whispers, shadows in the sand that move with grace. They make no dent in the sand, mere impressions gliding across and blending into the landscape.

It’s a reminder of the harmony between camels and the unforgiving desert – a testament to how they just belong. We love the quiet rhythm in this image. The drone perfectly captures moments between stillness and movement - in every grain of sand and across the desert’s vastness and solitude.

Running Wild and Free

What you see here isn’t just a drone photo but an entire spectrum of emotions. Nostalgia, wonder, delight, and everything in between. It’s almost like a scene from old Westerns some of us grew up watching, that moment in the movie when something magical is just about to happen.

Cue magnificent purple skies in agreement. The horse stands and waits, as if willing us into action and saying, “Well, are you going to just sit there?” If there was ever a photograph to spur people into movement, into just doing or feeling something, this here is it. What a splendid shot!

Staying Connected

What’s amazing about drone photography is how it elevates the everyday, placing objects, people, and places in a brand-new light. Now add some black and white into the mix and one gets arthouse level stuff. This could be a picture of roads or winding metal tubes.

Who knows? But most of all, it doesn’t really matter. Everyone could be looking at the same picture and have vastly different takeaways. We see plenty of interconnectedness in this one. Some of it takes us places while others have us going round and round in circles. It’s a fitting representation of life as we know it.

Inside Out, Upside Down

Holy mother of perspective! Our mind is blown. Seems we’re living in a topsy turvy world and, somehow, we wouldn’t have it any other way. Step into a realm that flips everything you know on its head. We have skies below us, rivers above us, and a sleepy upside down town in between. Nothing will ever be the same.

So this is what it’s like to live in a Terry Pratchett universe! You’re either going to love the adventure, or live with a queasy stomach all the time! Or both. A little nausea seems like a tiny compromise in exchange for living on a magical planet. This drone shot is unparalleled.

If Trepidation Were a Picture

Cliff sides just got more dramatic thanks to this drone shot in Monterey, California. The sun has set. The tides are making their presence felt! Is it just us or can you almost hear the crashing of the waves against the rocks? The image has a raw and jagged quality to it that makes it super compelling.

The Circle Bridge in Denmark isn't an ordinary bridge; it's a work of art. Designed by Olafur Eliasson, this bridge is about form and function coming together in perfect harmony. The graceful, circular shapes of the bridge stand serenely against the backdrop of Copenhagen's historic waterfront. It’s also a bridge that knows how to put on a show!
