So we’ve decided to go back in time, all the way to the 1970s, and look at the most memorable Grammy fashion outfits. Get ready to be blown away by these haute couture masterpieces, some less classy than others, but all astonishing.
Gloria Loring – 1972
American singer and actress Gloria Loring was huge in the 60s and 70s. She was one of the stars of the famous soap opera Days of our Lives and penned several theme songs for wildly popular sitcoms of the time.
Loring also had great taste in fashion, evidenced by the chic, timeless black dress she wore to the 1968 10th Grammy Awards. The ceremony occurred at the New York Hilton Hotel, so glamorous attire was obviously required.
Jeannie C. Riley – 1969
Not only did Jeannie C. Riley win the Grammy for “Best Female Country Vocal Performance,” but she was also one of the most stylish people to attend.
For the 1969 Grammy Awards, Riley wore a slicked-back hairdo (one that Kendall Jenner and Nicki Minaj have worn) and a stunning embroidered, flower-pattern dress with a waist strap. The dress was a perfect combination of sensual and modest, with a V-neck that caused a lot of head-turning that night.
Dionne Warwick – 1970
The 70s and 80s would not have been the same without Dionne Warwick. Considered one of the greatest singers of her time, diva Dionne Warwick has six Grammys under her belt, and she’s looked stunning for each event.
Below, we can see Warwick at the 1970 Grammy Awards wearing a gorgeous white gown with diamond details in the straps and waist. The dress was classy and gorgeous, but her wide eyes and beautiful smile set her apart.
Nancy Wilson – 1971
Ohio native Nancy Wilson had a stellar career spanning five decades, in which she became one of the world’s best jazz vocalists. She won a Grammy in 1964 for best R&B album and was called a “grand diva” of jazz, and she was also known for her great sense of fashion.
Wilson often worked with other musicians, one of them being saxophonist Benny Carter, with whom she appears above. Wilson wore a groovy, 70s-style dress with floral patterns in red, yellow, and cream, highlighting her figure and short, wavy hairdo.
Aretha Franklin – 1972
Aretha Franklin arrived at the 14th Annual Grammy Awards wearing a dazzling red and gold gown with gold embroidery and a matching headscarf. Franklin paired the look with some daring metallic eyeshadow, making her look absolutely stunning.
The Queen of Soul won a Grammy for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance for her cover of the beautiful song, Bridge Over Troubled Water , by Simon & Garfunkel. As always, the Queen is commanding respect.
Cher – 1974
She might not have won the Grammy award, but Cher won the award for best dressed. For the 1974 ceremony, the “Gypsys, Tramps, & Thieves” diva wore a white, bikini-style top with an iridescent butterfly in the middle.
To match, she wore a shiny butterfly clip on her long, sleek black hair and a transparent shawl over her shoulders. Cher basically looked like a magical fairytale princess as she presented the Album of the Year award to the legendary Stevie Wonder for his masterpiece, “Innervisions.”
Loretta Lynn – 1974
Country singer and guitarist Loretta Lynn was a vision in blue at the 1974 Grammys. Lynn was known as the Queen of Country, calling herself a coal miner’s daughter that wasn’t afraid to speak the truth about women’s issues.
Besides her unique talent, Lynn was known for her long, princess-style gowns, which always dazzled her. Above, Lynn wears a dark blue gown with the top half covered with diamond embroidery. Her gorgeous brown locks and big blue eyes matched the gown perfectly.
Yoko Ono and John Lennon – 1975
Lovebirds John Lennon and Yoko Ono attended the 1975 Grammy Awards in style. But even though this was back in the 1970s, their looks can be seen today. The ex-Beatle wore a white blouse and a black suit, with a flower brooch and the name ‘Elvis’ stitched above it.
Yoko Ono didn’t go through too much trouble when it came to picking an outfit, choosing a light grey slip dress, a feathered shawl, a small vintage bag, and a beautiful green gem necklace with black details.
Bette Midler and Stevie Wonder – 1975
Even though Bette Midler was one of the fashion stars of the night, the real winner of the 17th Annual Grammy Awards was Stevie Wonder. He took home four awards that night and wore a denim patchwork suit in style.
Bette Midler decided she would dress accordingly, literally taking the music motif straight to her head. She wore a vinyl record as a hair accessory, which actually looked great. In addition, Midler wore a sleek black gown adorned with two sequined silver, red and black flowers.
Ann-Margret -1975
Swedish-American actress and singer stunned crowds at the 1975 Grammy Awards with her spectacular gown. The star from Bye Bye Birdie and Carnal Knowledge arrived at the ceremony wearing a gold sequined dress with a slit up to her thigh.
Another hot feature of the attire was the diamond-shaped opening in the upper area, showing quite a bit of cleavage. However, the fact that it was closed with an elegant pin right below the neck gave the dress a classy look. Ann-Margret wore a dark brown fur coat to match her dress.
Dolly Parton - 1977
The Hollywood Palladium shone brighter for the 1977 Grammy Awards thanks to the one and only Dolly Parton. A symbol of American country music, actress, philanthropist, and just all-around beloved diva, Dolly wore a bright pink jumpsuit adorned with shiny beads all around.
She basically created her own fashion style – cowboy chic. Paired with her signature big blonde curls gave Dolly a perfect look. Even though she lost the Country Vocal Performance Award to Emmylou Harris, Dolly was the center of attention. Parties are just more fun when the Yeehaw Queen is around.

Crystal Gayle – 1978
It seems talent runs in the family, as Crystal Gayle, Loretta Lynn’s younger sister, was also a famous country music star. Gayle topped the charts with her 1977 hit, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” for which she won a Grammy Award in 1978.
For the special occasion, Gayle wore a gorgeous, white layered strapped gown that was both elegantly sensual and classy. The country singer’s black, shiny long hair and shadowy makeup were a great contrast. Not to mention Gayle’s piercing blue eyes.
Dionne Warwick and Quincy Jones – 1979
The ‘Walk On By’ diva Dionne Warwick wowed attendees at the 1979 Grammy Awards. She wore a spectacular black sheer dress covered in sparkling, multi-colored beads that were arranged in a cascade pattern.
Warwick paired the outfit with a thin, long silver necklace that went perfectly with the gown. Besides her, we see famous American record producer Quincy Jones, who was also looking dapper in a custom black and white suit with a big black velvet bowtie. Jones won an award that night for Best Instrumental Arrangement of The Wiz musical.
Pat Benatar – 1982
Famous American rock singer Pat Benatar was huge in the 80s, with classics like “Heartbreaker” and “Love is a Battlefield.” Benatar won a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, and she accepted her award looking fabulous.

Grace Jones – 1983
Jamaican-born model and singer Grace Jones have been a fashion icon since the 70s. Her disruptive and bold fashion choices have made her one of America’s most famous models, stunning everybody at every event with her unique outfits.
Above, Grace Jones attends the 1983 Grammy Awards in an avant-garde, science-fiction-themed black leather-straw outfit and an ultra-wide brim hat that looked more like an umbrella than an accessory. She paired the look with jewel-toned, purple eyeshadow, hot pink blush, and flawless red shiny lipstick.
Donna Summer -1983
Also known as the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer skyrocketed to fame during the 70s disco era. Who can forget hits like “I Feel Love” or “Hot Stuff”? The Queen received two nominations for the 1983 Grammys:
Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Even though Summer didn’t take the award home that year, she did win everybody’s attention with her outfit. Diana Ross – 1988
Diana Ross made her fame with the 1960s Motown act, The Supremes. Then Ross went on to have an extremely successful solo career, with chart-topping hits like “Endless Love” and “I’m Coming Out.” Ross has been nominated for 11 Grammy Awards, winning a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.
In 1988, Diana Ross attended the 30th Annual Grammy Awards in a stunning black sleeveless dress with gold and sequin details. But, of course, let’s not forget her gorgeous black mane that goes with any outfit.
Paula Abdul – 1990
For the 30th Annual Grammy Awards in 1990, singer Paula Abdul decided to honor the 80s with a fabulous monochromatic, gold fringe dress that truly made her look like a shining star. To make it even more 80s, Abdul wore a high, half ponytail with a matching gold scrunchie.
Of course, let’s not forget the shiny golden clutch purse and shiny shoes. Abdul was nominated for her first Grammy ever that year for “Straight Up,” and even though she didn’t win, she was probably comforted by the fact that she looked like an actual Grammy statue herself.
Mariah Carey – 1991
Three years before her world-famous (and unavoidable) Christmas album, Mariah Carey attended the 1991 Grammys for her nomination as Best New Artist. The diva won the award that night and looked spectacular while doing it.
Above, we see a 20-year-old Mariah wearing a classic, black strappy dress and a silver neckline. She wore matching, long silver earrings and defined cascading curls to show off her beautiful mane. Nowadays, it’s rare to see Mariah styling anything other than a super straight hairdo.
En Vogue – 1991
One of the most amazing looks at the 1991 Grammys was the foursome vocal girl group En Vogue. The group consisted of Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, Terry Ellis, and Maxine Jones, who arrived at the 33 rd Grammy Awards wearing traditional African outfits full of color and fun prints.
Everything, from their hairdos, hair accessories, clothes, and shoes, had an African motif, and they looked incredible. En Vogue was nominated for two Grammy Awards that year, Favorite Dance New Artist and Favorite Dance Single, for their chart-topping song, “Hold On.”
Celine Dion – 1993
In one of her first Grammy wins, Celine Dion showed up at the 1993 ceremony wearing a very daring look. It was one of the first times anybody attended the Grammys half-naked (before the J.Lo Versace shock), and Dion appeared with a very see-through black lace dress that exposed her black underwear whenever she turned around.
Dion won Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for The Beauty and the Beast: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack album that night.
Selena – 1994
Otherwise known as the “Queen of Tejano Music,” Selena paved her way to stardom with beautiful Mexican American ballads that were adored by all. She also had a passion for fashion, which was evident every time the diva attended an award ceremony.
Selena often designed her clothes, eventually creating her fashion label. For the 1994 Grammy Awards, Selena wore a stunning white gown reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour. For makeup, Selena wore her signature red lipstick, applied flawlessly. The star won her first Grammy that year for Best Mexican-American Album.
Mary J. Blige – 1996
The 38th Annual Grammy Awards in 1996 took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, and hip-hop queen Mary J. Blige looked like she was worthy of a shrine.
The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul wore a leopard print outfit covering her head to toe. She completed the killer ensemble with black leather gloves and glasses, looking like an absolute boss. And to feel even more like a boss, Blige took home the Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group that year.
Toni Braxton – 1997
American R&B singer Toni Braxton is one of the best-selling female artists in history, with tons of awards. She’s also known for her ability to stun with her red-carpet looks, as she did back in the 1997 Grammys.
Above we see Braxton wearing a sleek white gown showing her spectacular figure. Her short hair and subtle makeup go perfectly with the dress. With this look, Braxton proves that, if done right, a simple look goes a very long way.
Sheryl Crow – 1997
All-American folk sweetheart Sheryl Crow took home two Grammy awards in 1997 and a whole bunch of looks thanks to her exceptional outfit. Channeling her inner daredevil, Crow wore a see-through slip dress with leopard-print underwear underneath.
Let’s not forget I threw on a brown crocheted cardigan to balance the look. That outfit and her wild blonde curls made her look like a star, and we bet she felt like one with that Grammy statue in hand.
Jada Pinkett Smith – 1998
Until now, no one knew there could be such a thing as a red-carpet maternity dress. But, thanks to Jada Pinkett’s gorgeous two-toned gown, now we do. For the 1998 Grammy Awards, Will Smith’s girlfriend attended the event to support her beau, who was nominated for the “Men in Black” song.
At the time, she was pregnant with their son Jaden, and the sheer, shiny silver and black gown she had on, paired with a smile from ear to ear, made her look radiant.
Erykah Badu – 1999
Since her career took off in the 90s, singer/actress and record producer Erykah Badu has been known for her paradigm-shifting fashion choices. But, as with her music, Badu isn’t afraid to experiment with fashion and always delivers.
In one of her most conservative looks, Badu wore a multi-colored leather patchwork dress and a stunning Nefertiti headwrap. Her wide silver wristbands and high-platform pumps made her look like an Egyptian queen.
Britney Spears – 2000
Oh, the 2000s, what nostalgia! And nothing is more nostalgic than seeing Britney Spears in her “Ooops, I Did it Again” era. First, however, her famous “…Baby One More Time” got her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Spears arrived looking glamorous in a winter land white gown designed by Randolph Duke and accessorized with a fur shawl by Oscar de la Renta. The Princess of Pop channeled her inner Marilyn Monroe with the timeless Hollywood-glam outfit.
Jennifer Lopez – 2000
Nowadays, it’s not shocking to see an artist wearing near to nothing, but back in the 2000s, it was a very big deal, but J. Lo did it anyways. The pop diva showed up in a plunging, sheer green Versace dress that left very little to the imagination.
The dress caused such a scandal that it sparked millions of people to search online for pictures of the dress, so much so that Google decided to create an image search engine. But, alas, J. Lo’s bold fashion choice was responsible for creating Google Images!
Destiny’s Child – 2001
Before she was Queen Bey, she was one of Destiny’s Child, the popular girl group that dominated the music charts in the late 90s and early 2000s. Comprised of Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams, Destiny’s Child, became incredibly famous after their hit “Say My Name.”
The song won them two Grammy Awards at the 2001 ceremony, which they attended looking glamorous in matching green gowns. Gold and silver detailing made the singers shine with every step. The gowns were designed by Beyonce’s mother, Tina Knowles.
Nelly Furtado – 2002
The Portuguese-Canadian singer Nelly Furtado hit the music jackpot with her song “I’m Like a Bird”. The song became a worldwide hit and earned her a Grammy award in 2002 for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Apart from having a beautiful voice, Nelly also has a great fashion sense, as seen below in her white lacy gown by Giorgio Armani. Nelly looked classy and fun, not to mention gorgeous. She topped off the look with a matching lace wristband that we would definitely buy if we saw it in stores.
Christina Aguilera – 2006
The genie had left the bottle by 2006, the year Christina Aguilera dazzled crowds at the 2006 Grammys. Often referred to as the “Voice of a Generation,” Christina Aguilera is one of the best-selling artists in the world, with a career that has spanned two decades.
Her voice is spectacular and inimitable, just like her looks. Above, we see Aguilera attending the 2006 Grammy Awards after receiving a nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for “A Song for You,” her duet with Herbie Hancock. She wore a spectacular, old-Hollywood glamour-style white gown, sparkly diamond jewelry, shoes, and a bag.
Natasha Bedingfield – 2008
British singer and songwriter Natasha Bedingfield rose to fame with her 2004 debut album, Unwritten. The pop album was incredibly well-received by audiences and critics alike, selling over 2.3 million copies across the globe.
Bedingfield was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and the British pop star attended the 2008 Grammy Awards dressed in a gorgeous deep purple strapless dress with a belted waist. Even though she didn’t take home the award that night, Bedingfield looked as glamorous as ever.
M.I.A. – 2009
British rapper M.I.A. is known for her rebellious and fabulous attitude, which seeps into her fashion choices. Below we see M.I.A. attending the 2009 Grammy Awards, rocking a crazy but fantastic maternity outfit.
The “Paper Planes” singer wore a sheer dress with black and white polka-dot patches designed by House of Holland. M.I.A. chose white designer sneakers and black sunglasses to complete the cheeky look. The soon-to-be mom rocked her baby bump like a boss.
Lady Gaga – 2010
It’s no wonder Lady Gaga is one of the most anticipated guests at any event – her outfits are simply fabulous. And nothing was more ‘Gaga’ than the singer’s dress at the 52 nd Annual Grammy Awards.
She arrived wearing a galaxy-like, sci-fi-looking dress designed by Armani Prive and unconventional platform heels covered in sparkling jewels. In addition, she channeled a “dark Barbie” motif with neon-yellow hair, smoky eye shadow, and bright pink lipstick. Lady Gaga won the Grammys for Best Dance Recording for “Poker Face” and Best Electronic/Dance Album for “The Fame.”
Heidi Klum – 2011
Supermodel Heidi Klum showed up at the 2011 Grammy Awards wearing a stunning golden dress designed by Julien Macdonald. The dress had a seductive plunging neckline, cutout shoulders, and a leg slit that turned heads by the dozens.
The gown really accentuated her perfect figure, which Klum should definitely show off. The golden sheath sequin outfit went perfectly with her light brown/blonde hair streaks and subtle makeup. Of course, we wouldn’t expect any less glamour from the world-renowned fashion model.
Rihanna – 2011
Rihanna is so naturally gorgeous that she could be wearing a trash bag and look fantastic. Barbadian Beauty won her fourth Grammy award at the 2011 ceremony, and everybody was blown away by her looks.
Ri-Ri wore a Jean Paul Gaultier see-through stripped white gown that went perfectly with her bright auburn hair and red lipstick. Rihanna gave us a new spin on the naked dress trend that had become increasingly more popular at the time, combining the perfect dose of elegance.
Beyonce – 2013
Queen Bey’s fashion moments are so memorable that she will appear many times on this list. One of those moments was at the 2013 Grammy Awards, for which she wore an Osman black and white jumpsuit that was every bit classy as it was sensual.
Beyonce looked phenomenal, showing off her flawless figure. She paired the look with elegant black stiletto heels, a black clutch bag, and perfect red lips. Her hair was pulled back into an elegant bun.
Adele – 2013
The “Rolling in the Deep” singer has a voice that would bring anyone to tears with her soulful notes and epic vocal range. Adele is truly a diva in her own right, and she has 15 Grammys to prove it. One of those wins was at the 2013 Grammy Awards, which she attended in fabulous floral fashion.

Katy Perry – 2014
Katy Perry’s modern pop music style and her campy choice of outfits have earned her the moniker “Queen of Camp.” But this pop star didn’t look campy at all in her Valentino dress at the 2014 Grammy Awards.
Perry’s gown was a beautiful, sheer, faded pink-colored gown that was inscribed with black musical notes. She looked like a musical princess, enchanting everybody with that great big smile and pink lips. Perry took home three Grammy statues that night, probably the reason behind her huge smile.
Rihanna – 2015
Whoever said you couldn’t look fabulous as a cotton candy dessert clearly never saw Rihanna’s dress at the 2015 Grammys. Ri-Ri dazzled again with a bright pink, puffy tiered dress designed by Giambattista Valli.
The gown was larger than life, perfect for the red carpet and the stage since Rihanna took home an award that night for “The Monster,” her song with Eminem. When asked where she had found the stunning gown, Rihanna told host Ryan Seacrest that she was scrolling online one day, and the dress just popped up on her screen!
Taylor Swift – 2016
A young Taylor Swift wore a chic bob haircut and a two-toned bright-colored ensemble by Versace. The top was bright orange, and the pink skirt brought out Taylor’s gorgeous electric blue eyes. The haircut, red lips, and bright fabric channeled the 80s, which was exactly what Swift was going for.
With best friend Selena Gomez as her date that night, Swift took home three Grammy statues, including Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Music Video, and Album of the Year. In addition, she became the first female artist to win two Album of the Year Grammy awards.
Solange Knowles – 2017
The stunning singer, actress, and ballet dancer Solange Knowles had a keen interest in the arts from a young age. Apart from being Beyonce’s little sister and growing up surrounded by talented family members, Solange carved out her own space in the music world.
She took home her first Grammy statue at the 2017 Grammy Awards, and she looked incredible while doing it. Solange wore a Gucci gold pleated gown that shone as much as she did. The metallic dress had everybody in awe, and her hairdo was even more fabulous.
Carrie Underwood – 2017
Country queen Carrie Underwood always serves great looks regarding red-carpet events. For the 2017 Grammy Awards, cutie Carrie Underwood wore a fiery red Elie Madi gown with shiny red beaded details and a sensual keyhole front.
The beautiful long-sleeved sheer dress was the perfect combination of elegance and boldness. She might have an all-American sweetheart face, but Underwood certainly cleans up well regarding awards ceremonies.
Demi Lovato – 2017
Latina diva Demi Lovato brought her fashion A-game to the 2017 Grammy Awards. Her macrame-style dress was perfectly paired with her golden glow makeup and long wavy black hair. Lovato looked like a Greek goddess in the Julien Macdonald nude-colored gown with a keyhole cutout front.
Lovato, who won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album that night, was the belle of the ball with her chic see-through outfit. The crochet design was definitely an original choice.
Miley Cyrus – 2018
As hard as it might be to believe, there was a time when Miley Cyrus wore traditional gowns for red-carpet events. For the Grammy Awards ceremony in 2018, Miley Cyrus wore a Zac Posen ball gown that made her look like a Disney princess.
And her performance alongside legendary Elton John probably made her feel even more like a princess. The magenta-colored dress was accessorized with a classic, old Hollywood hairdo, and subtle makeup.
Cardi-B – 2019
Winning her first Grammy award for Best Rap Album, Cardi-B showed up to claim her statue dressed to the nines. The New York-born artist wore a vintage 1995 Thierry Mugler dress that looked like an oyster, making the rapper look like a walking art.
Cardi-B accessorized her hair with a mountain of pearls that made her look like a glowing siren, with bold and metallic eyeshadow and light pink lipstick. Cardi-B made history that night, becoming the first female solo rapper to ever win a Grammy.
Jennifer Lopez – 2019
Another fashion win for J.Lo was her amazing Ralph & Russo dress at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. Jenny from the block looked gorgeous in the diamond and gold studded silver-colored gown and the matching wide-brimmed hat.
Lopez wore sparkling jewelry from designer Niwaka, Jimmy Choo heels, and a classy Judith Lieber clutch bag for accessories. Definitely a far cry from her 2000 daring Versace look, but equally stunning. The artist was nominated for two Grammy awards that year.
Ariana Grande – 2020
Ariana Grande was a vision in tulle at the 2020 Grammy Awards in a custom gown designed by Giambattista Valli. The Beauty and the Beast singer looked like an actual Disney princess in the overwhelming Valli dress.
It was called “a silver-gray masterpiece that resembled actual clouds, featuring endless tiers of lovely ruffles.” That’s truly going out in style since this was one of the last red-carpet events in 2020 before the pandemic shut down everything. The Florida-born artist was nominated for 5 Grammys that year.
Dua Lipa – 2021
The English-Albanian mezzo-soprano singer Dua Lipa is known for her trademark disco-pop style, and she certainly adopted this for her 2021 Grammys outfit. Lipa channeled Cher’s iconic butterfly looked from 1974 and wore a pink, sparkling sheer gown by Versace.
The chain-mail dress with a thigh slit made Dua Lipa look like a hot dazzling butterfly with Northern Light-inspired stones and Swarovski crystals. She won a Grammy that year for Best Pop Vocal Album.
Rachel Zegler – 2022
The 21-year-old actress and singer Rachel Zegler got her big career break playing Maria Vasquez in the 2021 musical West Side Story . The role earned Zegler the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical.
She also attended the 2022 Grammy Awards in Las Vegas. Zegler wowed with a stunning gray dress by Dior Haute Couture and a chic short haircut that really favored her brunette locks, which reached her shoulders. She accessorized the look with a sparkling silver necklace, earrings, and bright red lipstick.
Chrissy Teigen – 2022
American supermodel and T.V. personality Chrissy Teigen made a name for herself when she appeared on the cover of the 2010 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and then again in the 2014 issue.
